"The much rumored news of comics to film involving CrossGen has broke at San Diego ComiCon. Today the sophomore company announced six media deals with some of the top names in television and feature films. Chuck Russell, best-known for his work on The Scorpion King, Mask, and Eraser, will be producing a film based on Scion. Scion is a fantasy adventure series featuring a young prince - Ethan of the Heron Kingdom - gifted with exceptional powers. After he accidentally injures and scars a rival prince - Bron of the Raven Kingdom - during ceremonial combat, he finds his country at war with theirs.

Russell is also working with Frank Darabont, who is famous for his work on The Majestic, Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile. The duo worked together on the remake of The Blob and the third installment in the Nightmare on Elm Street saga. Russell, already familiar with working in foreign locals, is teaming with Darabont to work on CrossGen's Eastern tale, Way of the Rat. Way of the Rat is CrossGen's Kung-Fu action series chronicling the misadventures of a young thief. Boon Sai Hong has been hired by gangsters to retrieve two items. Once the bandit finds the pieces, he unknowingly makes himself an enemy of almost everyone in the countryside. Now his only ally is a talking monkey named Po-Po, and Boon has to discover just why an encrusted scroll and ring are so valuable before they fall into the wrong hands - if there are really any right ones.

Robert Zemeckis made a name for himself when he stunned audiences with his psychological thriller What Lies Beneath and then impressed those same people with his range by the award-winning Tom Hanks film Cast Away. Zemeckis has signed on to work on CrossGen's first foray into the horror field, Route 666. Route 666 is the story of Cassie, a young woman who sees dead people ... No, really! Ever since she was little, she has had special, imaginary friends. But they aren't imaginary - they're spirits that haven't yet crossed over. Now, besides seeing the dead, she's begun seeing invaders from a realm that's after souls and, perhaps, something else. With Zemeckis' range and ability to shock, he's the perfect choice to bring this unpredictable series to the Silver Screen.

Another match is Larry Kasanoff of Threshold Entertainment and CrossGen's ex-intergalactic soldier with an attitude series, Sigil. Kasanoff kicked butt, literally, with his take on popular video game Mortal Kombat. He's not just a one-trick pony, though; the creator also got accolades for his comedy spy drama True Lies. Sigil is the story Samandahl Rey, an ex-soldier who didn't want to get out of the intergalactic war but wasn't given any choice in the matter when his commanders relieve him of duty. He and his best friend, Roiya, try leading a normal life, but they find themselves mixed up in the war again when she's mortally wounded and he's gifted with a sigil granting him great powers. Roiya finds new life as a part of their space ship, The Bitterluck, and Sam finds himself smack-dab in the middle of the fight. He quickly makes allies and enemies as his actions become legendary across this Universe and beyond. This space-faring epic is the perfect CrossGen series to become a weekly TV offering, and Kasanoff is well-suited to spearhead the project.

Bringing Meridian, CrossGen's fairy tale to life in a mix of animated and computer generated images, is Larry Whitaker of Cornerstone Animation. Whitaker's works include The Iron Giant, The Tigger Movie, and Mighty Joe Young. He's proven himself as someone who can take a young adult concept and make it accessible to people of all ages. Meridian is the story of Sephie, 16-year-old ruler of the floating city of Meridian. She struggles against her uncle Ilahn, the evil minister of Cacador who tries to use Sephie's powers towards his own nefarious ends. A fantastic coming-of-age tale, Meridian has the heart and emotion to appeal to a wide variety of entertainment connoisseurs.

Finally, CrossGen was pleased to announce that Wes Craven, creator of modern horror classics such as Nightmare on Elm Street and The People Under the Stairs, will be working on the movie adaptation of Mystic. Mystic is a world of magic where having powers and knowing how to perform spells and glamours is as common as breathing air. Giselle comes from a long line of powerful mystics, but she has no desire to follow in the family tradition. She'd rather be partying all the time. But when she's marked with power and absorbs the essences of the world's Guild Leaders, she becomes involved in a struggle she never asked for and, even with her newfound abilities, might not be able to overcome. Craven, used to pitting a character against overwhelming odds and making viewers believe in the impossible, is ideal to bring this story of improbabilities to life.

For all CrossGen projects, the Hollywood teams are working closely with the comics teams. As the ink is still wet on some of these deals, only Russell has been down to Oldsmarr, but he praised the experience, noting that he would "Rather spend time with the colorist on Scion than with some of the other people in Hollywood." Russell is a long-time comics reader who once considered a career as a cartoonist.

Kasanoff noted "Hollywood needs to be fed new ideas, and you're sitting right in the middle of them at this convention."

"The panel at SD Comic Con on Saturday corrected the one on Friday. Michael Uslan misspoke when he said it was going to be a movie (right now) but is instead going to be a TV show "

Russell traps CrossGen's 'Rat'
Aug. 06, 2002

Director Chuck Russell ("The Scorpion King") is the latest filmmaker to get on the comic book bandwagon. He and writer-director Frank Darabont have just closed a deal with Castle Rock Entertainment for an adaptation of CrossGeneration Comics' "Way of the Rat," a martial arts action-adventure to be developed through Darabont's Dark Woods Prods. Russell is planning to write and direct the feature. Separately, Russell also has optioned and is developing through his own Russell Prods. the CrossGen title "Scion," a medieval fantasy adventure with a sci-fi twist that Russell describes as a futuristic "Gladiator." "I have been a fan of comics and graphic novels since I was a kid," Russell said. "CrossGen seems to have a knack for stories that hold up in greater detail." (Gina McIntyre) Full story

Hier ist de Rest des Artikels...

"Chuck and I tend to respond to the same things," Darabont said of "Rat." "This kind of material, this wonderful, magical storytelling is so up Chuck's alley that this was a no-brainer. It's got a talking monkey -- what's not to like?"

With Hollywood's love affair with comic books going strong, CrossGen Comics, North America's fourth-largest comic book publisher, is in negotiations or has signed deals to bring several of its properties to the big and small screens, vp product development Tony Panaccio said. Among the projects:

oDreamWorks is in negotiations to acquire the yet-unpublished horror comic book "Route 666" for Robert Zemeckis' studio-based ImageMovers.

oThreshold Entertainment has optioned the feature film, TV and interactive rights to the space opera "Sigil," with an eye toward adapting the comic book for the small screen for a 2003 debut. Threshold president Larry Kasanoff confirmed that writer-director-producer Steven E. de Souza ("Knight Rider") has come aboard as showrunner, and they will begin shopping the project to networks in the next few weeks.

"I think most new comic books have been uninteresting, but I read this stuff, and it was great," Kasanoff said. "We fell in love with 'Sigil.' They're in spaceships in the future, and they're all 19-20 years old. The lead character has this unrequited love. It's great drama within a world of sultans and warlords."

oGlendale-based Cornerstone Animation Inc. has optioned the feature film, TV and all ancillary rights to the adventure-fantasy "Meridian." The comic book series spans 26 issues and tells the story of a teenage princess named Sephie who must battle evil plots against the throne when her father is killed.

Cornerstone chairman and chief creative officer Larry Whitaker (animation director on Disney's "Return to Neverland") will co-write the script with plans to direct the project, which is expected to go into production next year.

"A lot of the most successful films are based on comic books -- 'Road to Perdition,' 'Spider-Man,' " Whitaker said. "Great filmmaking is always predicated on great story, and that was the foremost thought in my mind -- what a great story the Meridian world is."

oWes Craven and his producing partner Marianne Maddalena have optioned the comic book "Mystic," with plans to develop the property as a live-action television series, Maddalena said.

Branded Entertainment's Michael Uslan ("Batman & Robin") is serving as executive producer on all of the CrossGen adaptations. He began working with CrossGen about a year ago and said he was impressed by the quality of the material, which shies away from the superhero genre in favor of science fiction, fantasy and horror.

"These were comics where the quality of art and story (were particularly strong)," Uslan said. "These characters, when they have an experience, they learn from it, they grow from it, they change from it. It was quite compelling stuff."

Based in Tampa Bay, Fla., CrossGen Comics was founded December 1999, and its entire line of 13 monthly titles is licensed to 34 countries in 12 languages. Panaccio said the company plans to introduce two new titles before year's end.

"We wanted to create titles that mapped much more closely to mainstream entertainment than the current capes-and-tights fare," Panaccio said of the kind of work CrossGen produces. "We selected genres that were very broad and map very well to what already sells in the fiction category in bookstores and what is selling well at the boxoffice."

"Frank Darabont's Darkwoods Prods. and Castle Rock Prods. have set up Way of the Rat at DreamWorks, with Chuck Russell directing.

Variety says Russell is adapting the "Rat" screenplay from the eponymous CrossGen comic book, a martial arts action-adventure set in Hong Kong that involves a young and acrobatic hero, a wise-talking monkey and a princess who's handy with blades.

"Rat" tops an active Darkwoods development slate, but Darabont hopes his next directorial project is one he won't produce, Fahrenheit 451."

Tja, WotR spielt also in Hong Kong... interessant.

CROSSGEN SIGNS WITH ENDEAVOR

Top Hollywood Agency Rounds Out Team Of A-List Entertainment Business Professionals

CrossGen Entertainment, one of the world’s leading publishers of comics and graphic novels, has been signed by Endeavor, widely considered one of the leading agencies in the entertainment industry, for representation in the world of film, television and video games.

The pact adds Endeavor to CrossGen’s Hollywood “A-Team,” which includes Branded Entertainment’s president Michael E. Uslan and VP F.J. DeSanto, executive producer of the Batman film franchise, and entertainment counsel, attorney Nancy Newhouse-Porter. Uslan and Porter will continue their work in ushering CrossGen’s properties into other mediums, with Endeavor providing a powerhouse punch of talent and connections that will complete the task of moving CrossGen more firmly into the mass consumer entertainment industry.

Endeavor co-founders Rick Rosen and Ariel Emanuel will be handling CrossGen’s client relationship, along with a team of Endeavor agents from the worlds of film, television and video games.

“CrossGen has some of the most exciting intellectual property in the business today,” said the Endeavor partner in a joint statement. “With titles like Sojourn and Way of the Rat, CrossGen has become a leader in the comic book industry. We’re thrilled to be working with them as they expand into television, film and video games.”

Mark Alessi, CEO of CrossGen Entertainment, was gratified by Endeavor’s enthusiasm for CrossGen’s comics.

“As we move our stories and characters into other mediums, the focus for us still has to remain the creation of great comics,” Alessi said. “Endeavor’s people understand that, and their response to our material shows that every day we work with them. Their people are comics fans and movie fans, and they are committed to helping us bring our stories to life in ways that make sense. They get it, and we’re proud to be with them.”

Endeavor--an integrated talent and literary agency that represents some of the most prolific writers, producers, directors and actors worldwide--counts Ben Affleck, Drew Barrymore, Matt Damon, Vin Diesel, Michael Douglas, Diane Lane, Edward Norton, Adam Sandler and Mark Wahlberg among their talent clients and Martin Scorsese, Aaron Sorkin and John Woo among their distinguished writers and directors. Endeavor has 18 returning shows in the prime time television line-up and 13 new shows debuting in the fall or at midseason. Endeavor clients run nearly 40% of network television shows and work on 80% of television real estate. The agency’s television packages include “The West Wing,” “Alias,” “That ‘70s Show,” “Without a Trace,” “The Gilmore Girls” and “WWE Smackdown.”

Ralph Kruhm

Es gibt nichts Neues.

Eigentlich sind es Kinofilme.

Was Meridian angeht - keine Ahnung! Deren Homepage ist jedenfalls offline.
