Revolution unleashes 'Hellboy' for Del Toro
Comicbook deal catches fire

Revolution Studios has committed to financing "Hellboy," a $60 million
bigscreen version of the Dark Horse Comics tale. Guillermo del Toro, who
helmed the New Line hit "Blade 2," will direct from his own adaptation,
making the action film his next pic.

Ron Perlman is being eyed to star as the title character, an oversized,
red-skinned character with a metallic left hand who looks like the devil
himself.

In the comic by Mike Mignola, Hellboy was hatched by occult-obsessed Nazis
who planned to unleash a hellacious weapon on their enemies. The Nazis were
thwarted, and the resulting being has become a force for good, an
investigator for the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Development who
regularly finds himself battling werewolves, vampires and other unsavory
foes.

The picture has long been a passion for del Toro and producers Lawrence
Gordon, Lloyd Levin and Mike Richardson, the latter of whom runs Dark Horse.
They originally set it up at Universal, where they had drafts done by such
writers as Peter Briggs. That studio just put the project in turnaround,
partly because the execs' hope was that their "The Fast and the Furious" and
"Pitch Black" star Vin Diesel would topline it. When that didn't happen, U
cooled on the pic.

But del Toro has plenty of momentum himself after "Blade 2" bowed to a $33
million opening weekend. Studios all over Hollywood offered him projects.
While DreamWorks quickly set up an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "At the
Mountain of Madness," and Fox and James Cameron's Lightstorm are developing
the horror film "Coffin" for del Toro to direct, the filmmaker wanted his
next film to be "Hellboy," come hell or high water.

Revolution's Todd Garner brought the film into the fold, and topper Joe Roth
gave the greenlight to the Big Red Guy.

Del Toro is repped by WMA and Gary Ungar.

Ron Perlman währe schon klasse für Hellboy gewesen.

Wieso "wäre"? Er wirds doch auch.
Wobei ich ihn nur bedingt zu meinen Lieblingsschauspielern zählen kann - man denke nur an die gruslig schlechte "Die Schöne und das Biest"-Serie. Aber wenn Mike und Guilermo ihn unbedingt haben wollen - sei's drum: Wird sowieso ein teils Make-Up, teils Computer-Effects-Hellboy werden.

Allein die Idee eines Hellboy-Realfilms ist so schräg, dass das ganze nur genial werden kann!

Abgesehen davon, daß ich mir nicht vorstellen kann, wie Hellboy in einem Realfilm einigermaßen überzeugend dargestellt werden soll (die haben's ja nicht mal im Computerspiel geschafft, ihn halbwegs treffend zu präsentieren, und da hätte man doch recht frei mit den Polygonen modellieren können), finde ich ebenfalls, daß Ron Perlman wesentlich besser zur Rolle paßt als Vin Diesel. Auch vom Alter her; Hellboy ist immerhin schon jenseits der 50.
Außerdem möchte ich nicht, daß Hellboy in der deutschen Fassung des Films mit der Synchronstimme von Nicholas Cage spricht. ;)

Trotzdem bin ich enorm skeptisch: Das Artwork von Mignola ist ein integraler Bestandteil der Hellboy-Welt, und ohne dieses Element kann's leicht nach hinten losgehen ... und ich weiß nicht, ob ich gewillt bin, einen Trash-Film zu akzeptieren, wenn's um meinen liebsten Comic-Helden geht. Da geht dann doch der Fanboy mit mir durch, fürchte ich.
Naja, aber wenn der Beleuchter auf üppigen Schattenwurf achtet und Hellboy schön oft durch Löcher im Boden stürzen darf, haut es vielleicht doch noch hin ... andererseits mache ich mir schon jetzt um die Qualität der CGI-Tentakelmonster Sorgen. ;)

"Schöne und das Biest"hin oder her, der Typ rockt!
Er hat die perfecte Hellboy Fresse und die statur past auch.

MIGNOLA COMIC TO BECOME FILM
----------------------------

The HELLBOY movie has been greenlit by Sony-based Revolution Studios and is
slated to begin shooting in January in Prague. The film will be directed by
Guillermo del Toro from his adaptation of Mike Mignola's HELLBOY comic. Ron
Perlman will star as Hellboy, the title character. No other casting has
been set at this time.

Patrick Palmer, Lawrence Gordon, Lloyd Levin, and Mike Richardson are
producing. Per VARIETY, Todd Garner brought the property to Revolution and
topper Joe Roth gave the greenlight to the film.

Today, a source close to the production said that they are "in negotiations
to have Rick Baker's Cinovation Studios do Hellboy's prosthetics and
make-up effects" and are "working to sign Tippett Studio as the lead
special effects house. Wayne Barlowe will be involved as a conceptual
artist for creature designs." Guillermo Navarro will be the cinematographer.

Del Toro has asked Mignola to work the entire length of the project, from
pre-production in Los Angeles to shooting in Prague. Mike Mignola will be
heavily involved in the creation of the film.

This gives Mignola just enough time to complete HELLBOY: THE THIRD WISH, a
two-issue comic mini-series due out this July and August. He's already
completed a short story with his daughter, Kate Mignola (age 7), for Dark
Horse's HAPPY ENDINGS book, which ships this fall.

Other HELLBOY comics slated for later this year (HELLBOY: THE ISLAND,
HELLBOY IN HELL, etc.) are now off the current schedule. Dark Horse
probably won't have any new HELLBOY comics to announce until the completion
of the film. In the meantime, HELLBOY editor Scott Allie will be looking
into some of the special projects that he and Mignola have previously
considered, including deluxe editions of the graphic novels, and an art of
Mignola/Hellboy book. More BPRD comics are being considered, but at the
moment, that is the least concrete of any of the plans.

Mignola is very excited about the movie and is looking forward to working
with del Toro, Ron Perlman, and the film team.

Über das Aussehen des Films würde ich mir keine Sorgen machen. Guillermo del Toro hat schon mit CRONOS und DEVIL'S BACKBONE, seinem vielleicht persönlichsten Projekt, bewiesen, welch unglaubliche Bilderpracht er hervorzaubern kann. Auch ein Actionvehikel wie BLADE 2 sieht dank seines Könnens nach weit mehr aus.

na, wenn ein anerkannter Filmspezialist wie Du das sagtst, bin ich ja beruhigt. Leider kenne ich von Del Toro bisher nur Mimic - aber der sah für ein B-Picture auch verdammt gut aus.

Hab' gestern BladeII gesehen und muss sagen: Nicht nur wegen des Hellboy-T-Shirts von Scat sehr unterhaltsam und sehenswert (wenn auch nicht so cool und stylish wie BladeI)! Auch der gute Ron hat eine gute Figur abgegeben...
