CrossGen wird mit Ehrungen überhäuft!

CG ist in diesem Jahr für fünf Michael Eisner Awards nominiert. Der Oscar der Comic-Branche könnte möglicherweise einen phänomenalen Erfolg für Ruse bedeuten, denn die Serie wurde nominiert als Best Continuing Series & Best New Series. Außerdem wurden Mark Waid, Butch Guice und Laura DePuy in denjeweiligen Kategorien, ebenfalls für Ruse, nominiert. Na, ob Waid den Preis auch ablehnen würde...?
Und es kommt noch besser: Zwei Werke von CG-Künstlern werden im diesjährigen "Spektrum" erscheinen. Spektrum ist ein jährlich erscheinendes Artbook, in dem die besten Werke der phantastischen Kunstmedien veröffentlicht und geehrt werden. Gezeigt wird ein Cover von Meridian (#14), sowie eine Seite aus Sojourn #4 (S.14)
Außerdem gewann CrossGen auch in diesem Jahr den Diamond Gem Award als Publisher of the Year im Bereich "Marktanteil unter 5%". Interessant dürfte diese Wahl werden, sobald CG die magische Marke überschretet und sich den "Großen" stellen darf. Lange kann es bei dem Wachstum nicht mehr dauern.

„Ruse“ hat drei der begehrten Usenet rec.arts.comics-Awards, genannt „Squiddies“, gewonnen. „Ruse #1“ gewann zusammen mit „Eightball #22“ & „New X-Men Annual 2001“ in der Kategorie „Best Comics Novella“. „Ruse“ gelang außerdem das Kunststück, zusammen mit DCs „Green Arrow“ als „Best New Series“ zu triumphieren, und Laura DePuy gewann die „Best Colorist“-Kategorie.

Kommentar:
Bedenkt man in diesem Zusamenhang die fünffache Eisner-Nominierung für „Ruse“, zeigt sich deutlich, welch grandioses Stückchen Comicgeschichte CrossGen mit „Ruse“ auf den Markt geworfen hat. Die Serie besticht durch ihr einheitliches Grunddesign: Klassische Erzählweise paart sich mit dazu passenden Bildern, die eine längst vergangene Zeit und Atmosphäre heraufbeschwören, im perfekt recherchierten Look der Gaslight-Epoche. Dazu passen die gefühlvollen, ausführlichen Dialoge, die aus „Ruse“ das jeweils „längste“ CG-Lesevergnügen machen, trotz 22 Seiten Umfang.
Die umfangreichere Startausgabe schließlich, als „Beste Comic Novella“ gekrönt, liest sich wie ein Roman, mit absolut dichtem und faszinierendem Setting, interessanten Charakteren, einer glaubwürdigen Erzählerfigur und, nicht zuletzt, einer gelungenen, das Original respektierenden und nichtsdestotrotz modernen Neuschöpfung der Welt von Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Die Serie setzt das in „Ruse #1“ kreierte Setting erfolgreich fort und versteht es, kontinuierlich Spannung, Atmosphäre und Wortwitz in die Waagschale zu werfen, ohne das Gleichgewicht zu zerstückeln.
Es sei noch angemerkt, daß insbesondere die Tatsache, daß hier der Erfolg eines Comic gefeiert wird, welches mit der konventionellen, vor allem amerikanischen, Comicgeschichte bricht und sich auf die Benutzung von ausgefeilten Dialogen und Streitgesprächen anstelle der Anwendung ausschließlicher Kawumm-Action stützt, nicht genug mit Zustimmung belohnt werden kann. Naja, immerhin hat der Hauptdarsteller ein Cape ;) .
„Ruse“ wird voraussichtlich im nächsten Jahr bei CrossGen Comics Deutschland an den Start gehen.

Walt Simonson zeichnet "The Path" #5 als Relief-Issue. Ron Marz wird die Gelegenheit nutzen, etwas mehr über den Background von Wulf zu erzählen.

Zur neuen "Brath"-Serie, die im Januar startet, gibt´s noch nicht allzuviel: Autor ist Chuck Dixon, Zeichner wird - Andrea Di Vito! Das bedeutet natürlich auch, daß "The First" einen neuen Zeichner bekommen wird...

Jim Cheung nimmt Urlaub, um seine Familie in UK zu besuchen und kräftig aufzutanken. Die Ausgaben von "Scion" #27-29 werden von Gastzeichner Lee Moder übernommen, danach macht Jim definitiv weiter!

Comics on the Web berücksichtigt jetzt das Breitband-Format: Endlich kann man die Comics alternativ auch mit wesentlich höherer Bildauflösung (und längeren Ladezeiten) betrachten, ohne verpixelt zu werden.

Im US-Forum werden wohl noch in dieser Woche eigene Boards für Edge und Forge online gehen, in dem sich dann die neuen Fans herumtreiben können, die nicht durch Infos aus den im 6-Monats-Vorsprung erscheinden Einzelheften gespoilert werden wollen.

"Way of the Rat" #1 ist als Free Preview bei ComicsOnTheWeb zu sehen. Allerdings gibt es noch ab und zu Probleme, die dafür sorgen, daß dort der Link zu "Way" nicht sofort auftaucht. Surft dort ein bißchen hin und her, dann wird es schon erscheinen...

RUSE GETS A NEW WRITER

Scott Beatty to Take Over RUSE, As Mark Waid Departs

The adventures of master detective Simon Archard and his femme fatale assistant, Emma Bishop, have a new wordsmith at the helm in writer Scott Beatty, who will be taking over the writing chores for the title with issue #13. Current RUSE writer Mark Waid will be leaving the title.

Scott Beatty has written extensively for DC Comics with credits including Joker: Last Laugh, Robin: Year One, Robin, over 27 different issues of Secret Files, and the upcoming Batman: Gotham Knights beginning with issue #33. Beatty will not be relocating to Tampa as he will only be working on this single title, but will be writing from his home in Pennsylvania. He will be making frequent trips to the CrossGen studio to interact with the creative team and discuss the title’s direction with head writer Barbara Kesel.

“Obviously, Mark helped to set the bar very high on RUSE,” noted Beatty. “I'm quite excited to be following him on the book, and I very much look forward to working with Butch, Mike, and Laura in chronicling the continuing exploits of Simon and Emma.”

Beatty was CrossGen’s choice for replacement based on the extremely high recommendation of current CrossGen writer Chuck Dixon. Dixon has collaborated with Beatty in the past and has served as something of a mentor to him.

“The choice of Scott Beatty to take over RUSE was a natural from the start,” said Dixon. “From his educational background to his deft grasp of characterization, he has all the requirements needed to chronicle the further adventures of Simon and Emma. He and I have worked together extensively and I was always amazed at his ability to drop in and perfectly nail the tone and ‘voice’ of any character. He's going to have fun on this book and I think readers will too.”

While Mark Waid was the writer of the title, he enjoyed a fully collaborative relationship with the other members of the RUSE creative team. A difference of opinion on the future direction of the title led to Waid’s decision to step down and allow a new writer to take his place.

“I greatly enjoyed working on RUSE during my run. Since the team wanted RUSE to go in a different direction than I did, we decided to part ways. It's unfortunate, but these things happen in a dynamic creative environment. I am pleased that someone I respect, such as Scott Beatty, has been chosen to take over the writing chores. I will very much miss working on RUSE, and I wish the team and CrossGen all the best of luck in the future.”

Waid’s influence on RUSE will last through issue #12. Beatty will take over the title full-time beginning with RUSE #13.

“In a perfect world, creators working together on the same project all have the same ideas, are all on the same page and work toward exactly the same vision,” RUSE colorist Laura DePuy said.

“Unfortunately,” added RUSE penciler Butch Guice, “it’s not a perfect world and it doesn’t always work out that way. Understanding that, the whole team is excited to welcome Scott Beatty aboard. He comes very highly regarded by Chuck and others, and from what we’ve seen so far, the book won’t miss a beat.”

Waid’s departure ends his one and a half year tenure with CrossGen.

“As I’ve said many times before, Mark Waid has done a commendable job writing RUSE and the title would not be as widely-acclaimed without him helping his team launch it,” said CrossGen Publisher and CEO Mark Alessi. “On behalf of the entire CrossGen staff, I want to thank him for his work on the title and wish him luck with all his future endeavors.”

Vom visuellen Niveau her kann es ja keine Einbußen geben, und warum denkst Du, daß Scott Beatty schlechter schreibt als Waid? Was hast Du von ihm gelesen?

Abgesehen davon halte ich es schon für wichtig, daß sich CG durchgesetzt hat und am ursprünglichen Plan für die Geschichte festhält. Daß sie sich nicht vorher von Waid getrennt haben, ist eigentlich ein Indiz dafür, daß er es bisher so gemacht hat, wie sie es wollten (und es UNS gefallen hat). Wenn er nun davon abschweifen wollte, ist es doch eher der QualitätsSICHERUNG dienlich, wenn sie ihn jetzt haben gehen lassen.

Naja, irgendwie kommt mir das vor wie Marvel unter der Regentschaft von Bob Harras ("Es wird getan, was ICH will, denn ICH bin der Boss, ICH bin unfehlbar!... scheisse! ICH bin gefeuert!"). Mark Waid ist ein Autor, der weiß, was er tut und es nicht nötig hat, sich gängeln zu lassen (siehe Captain America).

Da Ruse aber nach den ersten beiden Heften stark nachgelassen hat, bin ich mal gespannt.

Was ich von Scott Beaty gelesen habe? Er hat mal ein Secret File geschrieben, und das fand ich nicht so berauschend.
Außerdem ist er ein Schützling von Chuck Dixon, und wird wohl auch seinen Stil zu schreiben übernommen haben, welcher definitv der falsche für diese Serie ist!

@ Clint: Das CG-Universum ist ein wenig zu komplex, um da jedem Autoren seine Extratouren zu erlauben. Die Sache ist vor allem so lange interessant, wie man es schafft, die Kontinuität aufrechtzuerhalten, und, bei aller Verschiedenheit der Serien, eine durchgehende Atmosphäre zu erschaffen. Wenn Waid dagegengesteuert hat (oder es wollte) dann ist es bei so einem Projekt wie CG sehr wichtig, sich gegen solche Strömungen und für das Ganze zu entscheiden. Wenn Mark Waid einen Ego-Trip durchführen möchte, soll er einen eigenen Verlag aufmachen (meine persönliche Meinung). Abgesehen davon bin ich nicht der Meinung, daß Ruse nachgelassen hat, aber das ist natürlich wieder Geschmackssache.

@ comicfreak: Aha. Naja, dann müssen wir wohl alle zittern... ;) Nein, ganz im Ernst, ich würde mir erstmal keine Sorgen machen; bisher war so ziemlich jede Entscheidung bzgl. eines Personalwechsels für eine CG-Serie von Vorteil (m.E. mit einer Ausnahme, aber das wäre ein verdammt guter Schnitt), also laß´ uns den Tee noch mal heißmachen und abwarten.

Ich bin auch nicht der Meinung das Ruse nachgelassen hat. Ich würde sogar behaupten, daß es mit den letzten beiden Ausgaben wieder besser geworden ist.
Woher wißt ihr, daß Waid auf einem Ego-Trip gewesen sein soll?

Ich habe ja zum Glück nix von Ego-Trip erzählt, sondern nur, daß Waid quasi ein gebranntes Kind ist. Ich würde mich solchen Maßregelungen auch nicht unterziehen wollen, zumal die Serien ja schließlich (noch) getrennt laufen.
Hab' jetzt gerade die #8 gelesen und war wieder positiv überrascht. Auch Meridian hat endlich wieder an Fahrt gewonnen.

Heißt für mich frei übersetzt, daß Waid nicht bereit war, sich der Gesamtgeschichte unterzuordnen, daher meine Formulierung. Mark Alessi hat seine Geschichte nicht entwickelt, um sie von einem einzelnen Autor in eine Richtung gehen zu lassen, die er nicht haben möchte. Und m.E. ist das sein gutes Recht. Wenn Waid seine eigene Geschichte haben will, soll er es selber machen. Das meinte ich mit Ego-Trip. Wenn Du für jemanden arbeitest, machst Du es so, wie er es will, und nicht andersherum. Versuchst Du es trotzdem, ist es ein Ego-Trip. Das war auch überhaupt nicht negativ gemeint.

CrossGeneration Comics Becomes Only Western Publisher to be Granted Permission To Publish Comics in China

CrossGeneration Comics has struck an exclusive deal with the Chinese publisher Dian Shi Tang, one of China's largest publishers, to begin publishing CrossGen's entire line of titles in August, 2002.

Dian Shi Tang is one of the five largest publishers in China, and the only one of those five that is not government-owned, publishing more than 300 titles in 2001. The company has good experience with publications from the U.S., having handled such titles as, "Chicken Soup for the Soul" and "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus." The company currently possesses distribution deals in more than 100 cities around China. This deal with Dian Shi Tang grants CrossGen exclusivity, making CrossGen the only U.S. comics publisher whose titles will be published by Dian Shi Tangs in China.

"This is a big one," said CrossGen CEO and Publisher Mark Alessi. "We've been blazing a trail around the world, with our titles licensed in 31 countries and in 11 languages, but breaking through in China is a barrier we never thought we'd overcome this early in our business."

The deal was brokered by executives with Enorbus Technologies, one of China's largest wireless entertainment companies. Enorbus currently has a licensing agreement with CrossGen to produce wireless games and icons for the worldwide mobile phone marketplace. Being based in China, Enorbus leveraged its knowledge of CrossGen's product line with its own business contacts in the Chinese publishing community to help bring about the licensed publishing arrangement with Dian Shi Tang. Enorbus has also brokered meetings with Chinese-based Web portals that will jointly work with CrossGen and Dian Shi Tang to eventually bring a Chinese version of CrossGen's Comics on the Web to China's major Web portals.

"We believe that with the right promotion, we can make CrossGen the next big thing from America," said Ms. Sun Yi Xue, President of Dian Shi Tang. "These are some of the most beautiful comics we have seen from just about any country from around the world, and the stories are so universal, we believe that CrossGen will be a big hit in China."

Visitors to selected Clear Channel station Web sites are invited to become CrossGen Comics on the Web subscribers in a project the companies consider to be mutually beneficial. With the current success of "Spider-Man" and "Blade 2," the companies feel that audience interest in comics is high, and therefore the partnership launched Friday is well timed for maximum impact.

CROSSGEN CREATES NEW PUBLISHING ENTITY AND LAUNCHES NEW IMPRINT

CG Entertainment To Publish Comics From CrossGen And Creator-Owned Companies; New Imprint, Code 6 Comics, Created For Non-CG Titles

CrossGeneration Comics, Inc. has launched two entities which will make it easier for creators to see their work published, licensed properties to make the transition into comic book form, and help resurrect other comics which have languished without the support of a publishing house.

CG Entertainment (CGE) is a publishing entity owned by CrossGen Comics that would publish non-CrossGen Universe comic book projects. Those projects include but are not limited to:
· Affiliated Creator-Owned comics - Comics created and owned by companies outside of CrossGen.
· Code 6 Comics - Code 6 Comics is a new imprint under CrossGen created for the purpose of publishing non-CrossGen Universe continuity titles, such as new projects outside of the CrossGen stable of creators who are willing to share ownership of the project with Code 6 Comics.

In addition, all of CrossGen’s current and future titles within - as well as outside - the continuity of the CrossGen Universe will also now be published through CG Entertainment’s Supply Agreement with Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. Diamond Comic Distributors has graciously allowed CrossGen to assign this agreement to CGE. This will allow CrossGen to publish and distribute all of the products stated above through the CGE banner. None of these new ventures could have been implemented without the help of Diamond Comic Distributors, and CrossGen is deeply appreciative of Diamond’s consideration in this regard.

Creators whose titles are published through CGE as affiliates will retain complete ownership of their properties, but be able to choose from an extensive list of added value services from CrossGen that include marketing, licensing, Comics on the Web and merchandising among others. These same creators will also benefit from lower printing costs and better discounts and promotion in the direct market, again with thanks going to Diamond Comic Distributors for allowing CrossGen to assign its current distribution contract to CGE. As more titles are added under CGE, deeper discounts and a higher profile in the direct market will result.

Code 6 Comics, CrossGen’s independent comics imprint, is named for the Florida police signal code for “escaped prisoner.” This is a hint at the imprint’s primary purpose, which is to provide a friendly home for creator-developed projects which lack the funding for traditional self-publishing. Through Code 6 Comics, creators would share ownership of the titles, but in return receive a much more comprehensive set of benefits that would allow them to make a living at producing such comics, while at the same time benefiting from back-end participation in the profitability of those titles through all print and ancillary revenue streams. Das meint der bierernst. Und so, wie die sich ranschmeißen, könnte es tatsächlich sehr spannend werden... Jedenfalls bin ich froh, von Anfang an dabeigewesen zu sein und all die bisherigen netten Überraschungen miterlebt zu haben. CG hat in zwei Jahren den Markt auf den Kopf gestellt. Und jetzt schütteln sie ihn mal ganz kräftig durch... This is only the Beginning...

Team Red Star Brings Their Flagship Title to CrossGen's New Publishing Line

CrossGeneration Comics new publishing imprint, CG Entertainment, will begin publishing the popular independent comic book The Red Star starting with issue #10, the beginning of the book's newest story arc, scheduled for release in November.

The Red Star will be the first independent comic to carry CG Entertainment's logo, and be solicited and distributed to the direct market under the new CGE label. CG Entertainment (CGE) is a publishing entity owned by CrossGen Comics that would publish non-CrossGen Universe comic book projects. Diamond Comic Distributors has graciously allowed CrossGen to assign its publishing Supply Agreement to CGE and allow CrossGen to publish and distribute non-CrossGen continuity titles - such as The Red Star - through CGE, as well. This new venture could have not have been created without the help of Diamond Comic Distributors, and CrossGen is deeply appreciative of Diamond's consideration in this regard.

"The Red Star is one of the most beautiful comics being published today, and what Team Red Star has been going through in order to get their book to market is a perfect illustration of why CGE exists," Alessi said. "The fact that these guys have had to work so hard to get this book on shelves is ridiculous. We believe in their book, we believe in their commitment to quality and we believe that together we can pave the way for a long and prosperous run with one of the highest quality comics on the market today. Team Red Star's new publishing imprint, Archangel Studios, will provide CGE with the finished product, which CGE will solicit, distribute and market.

CrossGen Chronicles war ja nie der stabilste Titel (produktionstechnisch gesehen), nun sieht es so aus, als ob Chronicles für eine unbestimmte Zeit eingemottet wird. Das jedenfalls kündigt Gina in der aktuellen Ausgabe #8 an. CrossGen will sich in Zukunft stärker auf One Shots und Mini-Serien konzentrieren, um Geheimnisse der Vergangenheit zu lüften. Das erklärt nun auch die Dauer-Umfrage bei www.crossgen.com, bei der seit Wochen über verschiedene Mini-Serien-Ideen abgestimmt werden kann...

Passend zum Thema wird es im Oktober ein One Shot namens "Lawbringer" geben, geschrieben von Tony Bedard, gezeichnet von Rudy Nebres. Dabei dürfte es um die geheimnisvollen Mächtigen aus Negation gehen.

Punkt 1: Es wäre super, wenn Du in Zukunft keine ellenlangen Zitate mehr in Deine Beiträge setzen würdest. Damit kannst Du mir nämlich die Zeit sparen, diese wieder zu löschen. Durch die Überschrift Deines Beitrages weiß jeder, worum es geht - ein so ausführliches Zitat, auf das Du nirgendwo im Detail eingehst, ist also nicht nötig.
Punkt 2: So wie ich die Situation als Fan und Laie beurteile, dürfte CrossGen Comics Deutschland in Zukunft eine Option auf alle bei CGE erscheinenden Serien haben. Ob sie diese dann nutzen, dürfte deren Entscheidung sein. Wenn Red Star hierzulande bisher nicht gut läuft, werden sie sich das bestimmt zweimal überlegen.

Was wie immer an den Abverkäufen liegt, auf die man als Fan gerade hierzulande sicherlich auch Einfluss nehmen kann. Schließlich sind es im Höchstfall ein paar Tausend Käufer, die es hier zu beeinflussen gilt - und ich hätte da eine ganz irre Idee: Wieso nimmt sich nicht beispielsweise mal jemand, der "Red Star" toll findet (und ich kann aufrichtig berichten, dass ich beim Übersetzen der wirklich schön poetischen Texte viel, viel Spaß hatte!), die Zeit für die Erstellung einer deutschen Homepage? Oder schreibt massiv an HIT, dass die die Serie mal featuren sollen? Oder müllt jeden Thread bei Marvel zu, dass die dort mal in "Red Star" reinschauen sollen? Noch ist es nicht zu spät, die Hefte sind im Handel und der Verkauf von ein paar Hundert weiteren Heften, den eine solche Initiative theoretisch bewirken könnte, wäre ein verdammt gutes Argument für die Fortführung der Serie.

Selbst als Fan hat man immer die Möglichkeit der Mundpropaganda, ob in positiver oder negativer Ausrichtung. Und die ist wichtig, also nutzt diese Möglichkeit.

Generell gibt es erstaunlich wenig Fansites hierzulande. Auch zu CROSSGEN wäre das wünschenswert.

Andy hat sich ja vor allem als Inker von Barts Zeichnungen bei The First einen Namen gemacht. Selbst gezeichnet hat er u.a. die First-Kurzgeschichte "Mentor´s Councel" in First #12 & 13, sowie die Fill-Ins Crux #11, Meridian #22, und, in der Tat, Negation #6.

Interessant sind aber auch die Dinge, die hinter verschlossenen Türen ablaufen:

"One of the more interesting elements of major comics conventions for pros and those covering the cons is the lively rumor mill the con floor inevitably turns into. Rumors are used as currency between pros during the shows, with many industry insiders trading info and hearsay in order to try to keep track of the major goings-ons.
Because of CrossGen’s prominent presence at the show and their announcement of CrossGen Entertainment and Code 6 Comics a couple of weeks ago, the Tampa publisher was the rumor mill ‘It Girl’ for most of the Wizardworld: Chicago weekend.

The weekend began with the hot rumor that CrossGen and Top Cow were possibly talking to one another, with wild speculation of possible scenarios involving the two publishers bandied about.

The rumors climaxed on late Saturday on the con floor and in the aftershow pro hangouts as the con’s worst kept secret was Mark Alessi and reps for Top Cow, including President Matt Hawkins were having dinner together that night. But less than 24 hours later, that rumor quickly petered out and the 180 degree Sunday buzz was any possible deals between CrossGen and Top Cow were highly unlikely.

Other CrossGen rumors ranged from the fairly conservative (prominent creators doing work for Code 6, stemming from creators like Mike Mignola being seen visiting the Cross booth) to the ‘How the hell did that get started’ variety (CrossGen buying Image Comics whole-cloth, setting up an alternate distribution system to compete with Diamond…)

The one rumor that seemed to have some legs, however, and gained prominence towards the close of the show (though hardly confirmed), was possible talks between CrossGen Entertainment and Brian Pulido’s Chaos! Comics.

Though a seemingly very odd fit on the surface, Pulido and Alessi reportedly have expressed mutual respect for one another in the past, and the two publishers could have something to offer one another - CrossGen all the publishing tools like foreign distribution, the Comics on the Web program and a shot in the arm profile-wise for Chaos!, and Chaos! a few hard-to-come-by points of market share and their own base readership for CrossGen.

Ich meine, nichts gegen ein gesundes Selbstvertrauen, aber das ist mir doch zu weit hergeholt!

Heftiger Artikel!

Tja, also, man bemerkt eine eindeutige Tendenz bei Mark, mit all den Idioten abrechnen zu wollen, die das ganze CG-Projekt während der vergangenen zwei Jahre lächerlich gemacht haben. Um ehrlich zu sein, da sehe ich gerne aus erster Reihe zu, denn verdient haben sie es alle. Ob das guter Stil ist, sei dahingestellt, ich persönlich kann ihm nur zustimmen.

Die Sache mit der Nummer Eins halte ich selbst auch etwas für zu heftig, werde aber den Teufel tun und behaupten, daß es nicht klappen wird. Wovon ich ganz fest ausgehe, ist hingegen Nummer Vier bis 2003, und Nummer Drei bis 2005. Was danach kommt, hängt m.E. von der Qualität der Filme und TV-Serien ab.

Ich persönlich lese das ganze mit gemischten Gefühlen. Es liest sich für mich wie eine Kriegserklärung. Crossgen gegen den Rest der Welt! (Ich weiß, ich übertreibe)
Klar bringt Crossgen gute Serien raus. Aber hat der Verlag wirklich das Potential dazu, sich lange im Geschäft zu halten?
Auf dem Comicbookresourcesmessageboard hat ein User Crossgen mit Verlagen wie Acclaim verglichen. Guter Start, aber nach einiger Zeit wieder weg vom Fenster.
Ich selber glaube das nicht, aber ebensowenig glaube ich, das Crossgen im nächsten Jahr die Nummer 1 sein wird. Dafür verkaufen sie IMHO noch zu wenig Blockbustertitel. Die meisten Serien rangieren ja noch außerhalb der Top 100. (Jetzt kriege ich einen auf den Deckel!)
Was Crossgen fehlt? Nichts! Das ist ja das paradoxe! Es ist ein guter Verlag, mit guten Titeln, und jeder Menge Potential. Nur sollte Mark Alessi darauf achten, das Crossgen nicht noch schneller expandiert!

Das mit den Top 100 ist ja nur deshalb, weil Marvel keine Reorders mehr zuläßt. Also ordern die Shops immer Berge von dem Zeug im voraus, was deren Titel natürlich in die Höhe schnellen läßt. Und Reorders erscheinen in de Top 100 generell nicht, und gerade da hat CG einen Bombenerfolg...

Brath is really two stories; the fall and rise of Brath's clan and the intrigues in "Rome" of the line of Quintillius, our fictional emperor. It's the story of two families. We'll see lots of both. I just completed scripting #6 which takes place entirely in an arena during a bloody gladiator fight.
Andrea is especially pumped for this. He's FROM Rome and grew up on even more of the old sword and sandal epics than I did. We're assembling mountains of reference. I just bought a collection of Look and Learn weeklies from the UK which had HUNDREDS of fantastic illos of Roman life. I even found some great trireme ref in an old men's magazine today.
This book is gonna cross the Rubicon in style, citizen."

Ich glaub nicht dass Crossgen so schnell wieder verschwindet, schon allein weil Alessi wohl 'nen größeren Finanzpuffer hat als Acclaim und Konsorten aufweisen konnten!
Klar wird Alessi nicht unendlich viel Geld reinstecken wenn nichts dabei rauskommt, aber sollte 'ne kleinere Durststrecke kommen kann Crossgen doch erstmal weitermachen wo anderen "klein"Verlagen schon die Finanzmittel ausgehen!
Würd ich mal raten ;)

Adding to its line-up, and continuing to collect publishers that were caught in the LPC bankruptcy, CDS today announced that it has signed an agreement with CrossGen to distribute its graphic novels and other books to the book trade. This agreement will allow CDS to exclusively represent CrossGen to the bookstore, library, warehouse club, and mass merchandiser markets.
“We were impressed by CDS’ commitment to growing the graphic novel category within bookstores and mass merchants. They have a great vision for the future, and the experience and resources to realize it,” said Chris Oarr, Director of Marketing and Sales for CrossGen Comics in a CDS release.

Michael Murphy, who will join CDS from LPC to help head up the new graphic novel publishing group, states, "CrossGen's signing is particularly meaningful as CDS enters the business of representing graphic novels to the book trade. After a rapid rise in the Direct Market over the last few years, CrossGen started shipping to bookstore accounts just two months ago. We have already shipped over 70,000 CrossGen books, making theirs one of the strongest launches ever into the book trade for any graphic novel publisher. "The much rumored news of comics to film involving CrossGen has broke at San Diego ComiCon. Today the sophomore company announced six media deals with some of the top names in television and feature films. Chuck Russell, best-known for his work on The Scorpion King, Mask, and Eraser, will be producing a film based on Scion. Scion is a fantasy adventure series featuring a young prince - Ethan of the Heron Kingdom - gifted with exceptional powers. After he accidentally injures and scars a rival prince - Bron of the Raven Kingdom - during ceremonial combat, he finds his country at war with theirs.

Russell is also working with Frank Darabont, who is famous for his work on The Majestic, Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile. The duo worked together on the remake of The Blob and the third installment in the Nightmare on Elm Street saga. Russell, already familiar with working in foreign locals, is teaming with Darabont to work on CrossGen's Eastern tale, Way of the Rat. Way of the Rat is CrossGen's Kung-Fu action series chronicling the misadventures of a young thief. Boon Sai Hong has been hired by gangsters to retrieve two items. Once the bandit finds the pieces, he unknowingly makes himself an enemy of almost everyone in the countryside. Now his only ally is a talking monkey named Po-Po, and Boon has to discover just why an encrusted scroll and ring are so valuable before they fall into the wrong hands - if there are really any right ones.

Robert Zemeckis made a name for himself when he stunned audiences with his psychological thriller What Lies Beneath and then impressed those same people with his range by the award-winning Tom Hanks film Cast Away. Zemeckis has signed on to work on CrossGen's first foray into the horror field, Route 666. Route 666 is the story of Cassie, a young woman who sees dead people ... No, really! Ever since she was little, she has had special, imaginary friends. But they aren't imaginary - they're spirits that haven't yet crossed over. Now, besides seeing the dead, she's begun seeing invaders from a realm that's after souls and, perhaps, something else. Another match is Larry Kasanoff of Threshold Entertainment and CrossGen's ex-intergalactic soldier with an attitude series, Sigil. Kasanoff kicked butt, literally, with his take on popular video game Mortal Kombat. He's not just a one-trick pony, though; the creator also got accolades for his comedy spy drama True Lies. Sigil is the story Samandahl Rey, an ex-soldier who didn't want to get out of the intergalactic war but wasn't given any choice in the matter when his commanders relieve him of duty. He and his best friend, Roiya, try leading a normal life, but they find themselves mixed up in the war again when she's mortally wounded and he's gifted with a sigil granting him great powers. Roiya finds new life as a part of their space ship, The Bitterluck, and Sam finds himself smack-dab in the middle of the fight. He quickly makes allies and enemies as his actions become legendary across this Universe and beyond. This space-faring epic is the perfect CrossGen series to become a weekly TV offering, and Kasanoff is well-suited to spearhead the project.

Bringing Meridian, CrossGen's fairy tale to life in a mix of animated and computer generated images, is Larry Whitaker of Cornerstone Animation. Whitaker's works include The Iron Giant, The Tigger Movie, and Mighty Joe Young. He's proven himself as someone who can take a young adult concept and make it accessible to people of all ages. Meridian is the story of Sephie, 16-year-old ruler of the floating city of Meridian. She struggles against her uncle Ilahn, the evil minister of Cacador who tries to use Sephie's powers towards his own nefarious ends. A fantastic coming-of-age tale, Meridian has the heart and emotion to appeal to a wide variety of entertainment connoisseurs.

Finally, CrossGen was pleased to announce that Wes Craven, creator of modern horror classics such as Nightmare on Elm Street and The People Under the Stairs, will be working on the movie adaptation of Mystic. Mystic is a world of magic where having powers and knowing how to perform spells and glamours is as common as breathing air. Giselle comes from a long line of powerful mystics, but she has no desire to follow in the family tradition. She'd rather be partying all the time. But when she's marked with power and absorbs the essences of the world's Guild Leaders, she becomes involved in a struggle she never asked for and, even with her newfound abilities, might not be able to overcome. Craven, used to pitting a character against overwhelming odds and making viewers believe in the impossible, is ideal to bring this story of improbabilities to life.

For all CrossGen projects, the Hollywood teams are working closely with the comics teams. As the ink is still wet on some of these deals, only Russell has been down to Oldsmarr, but he praised the experience, noting that he would "Rather spend time with the colorist on Scion than with some of the other people in Hollywood." Russell is a long-time comics reader who once considered a career as a cartoonist.

"Code Six comics announced today via a press release that is has signed an agreement with R.A. Salvatore to bring his fantasy series, Demon Wars to comic book form. The original Demon Wars series told the story of Elbryan Wyndon, an elven-trained Ranger and his band of friends as they face off against the demon, Dactyl, an embodiment of evil.
Salvatore has begun writing a second series of Demon Wars novels, with the first two, Ascendance and Transcendence already out in paperback, and it is those that the comics will be based upon. The author himself will not write the comics, but hois editorial presence will be felt throughout the process. Writer Scott Ciencin, a New York Times best-selling author of adults and children’s fiction. Both Salvatore and Ciencin have written novels for the Forgotten Realms series of novels.

Artist Ron Wagner has been tapped to be among the first artists to work on the book.

“Our mission at CrossGen has always been to bring new readers to comics – and to do it by raising the bar on quality as much as possible,” said Ian Feller, Director of Business Development of Code Six Comics, in a release. “This is one of those deals that delivers on both of those promises with a powerful punch. Bob Salvatore is one of the most-read fantasy writers in the world, and we’ll be betting that we’ll all be able to bring some of his millions of readers into comics with this series.

Said Salvatore in the same release: “I’m really excited about this, because I come from a ‘shared world’ universe with Demon Wars. I’m looking at what CrossGen was doing, and I see an absolute parallel to what I was doing. I wanted to take Demon Wars to a new audience, and Code Six wants to take comics to a new audience, so this is a perfect first step for both of us. This is going to be a lot of fun.”

The particulars of the creative team, and the regularity of the title have yet to be determined, and the launch date of the first issue has not been set.

Ownership of the property is also slightly unclear, as one of the stipulations of Code Six comics requires that CrossGen own over 50% of the property. Look for an update soon regarding this new Code Six project at Newsarama.com.

Additionally, CrossGen has confirmed that Hurricane Entertainment’s John Carpenter's Snake Plissken Chronicles, will be published through CGE.
