"Grand Prix RTL 2007" klingt immer noch ganz furchtbar (als würde Dieter Bohlen in der Jury sitzen), aber es ist ein französischer Comicpreis.

    Angoulême 2008

    Hier sind die nominierten Neuerscheinungen
    http://www.bdangouleme.com/22-select...cial-selection

Die nominierten Comics aus Frankreich und der nicht-englischsprachigen Welt; ohne Mangas:

"Mourir partir revenir - le jeu des hirondelles" (Z+T: Zeina Abirached) Cambourakis
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1657...rondelles.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782916589039/alb.htm
«I think that maybe, after all, we are more or less safe in here.» The sentence, uttered by the author's grand-mother in 1984, could seem pretty ordinary if it had not been said in Beirut, during the war. After discovering TV archives, the author felt the urge to deliver this moving account about daily life in wartime, under the crash of bombs and bullets, in the false safety of a flat hall. This graphic novel, full of narrative and formal innovations, calls to mind Persepolis's powerful story.

"L'autre fin du monde" (Z+T: Ibn Al Rabin) Atrabile
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1622...onde-(L-).html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782940329335/alb.htm
L'Autre Fin du monde is a bulky book which is funny, moving, disconcerting and fascinating from page one to page one thousand one hundred and twenty (sic). Milch lives in a big isolated house on the edge of the forest, a house he inherited from his fiancée. Every night, her ghost leaves the tomb and wanders about the woods. Although Milch tried everything to communicate with her, her spectre remains imperturbably mute. As his book really sets the cat among the pigeons, Ibn Al Rabin delivers his thoughts - that are less minimalist than they seem - about death and love, life after death and above all, love after life ...

    "Capricorne" (Z+T: Andréas) Le Lombard
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1700...__1.html#59216
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782803622993/alb.htm
A form experimenter, Andréas (b. 1951) approaches the Capricorne series as a lab for narrative and graphic research. The perfectly blank cover of the twelth volume echoes the deliberate absence of words and dialogues. This constraint is far from gratuitous since the story takes place at high altitude, where silence is the rule if you want to avoid avalanches ... Ascending with difficulty in the eternal snows, the hero, an astrologer, comes out of the ordeal as brilliantly as his creator.

"Par les chemins noirs" (Z+T: David B) Futuropolis
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1511...ins-noirs.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782754801003/alb.htm
As a warm supporter of Italy's entry in the First World War on the side of the Allies, Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio bravely joined in the fighting. He seized the city of Rijeka (Fiume in Italian) and forced the withdrawal of the Allied forces. He offered the city to Italy which refused the present. He then declared the Italian Regency of Carnaro which soon lapsed into chaos. David B. revisits this poorly known historical episode. In Fiume, great ideas mixed with trafficking as everybody tried to get something out of the mess, while rival factions fought violently. And D'Annunzio ruled over the city with panache and inconsistency.

    "Gus" (Z+T: Christophe Blain) Dargaud
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-14662-BD-Gus.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782205057980/alb.htm
Gus is a nickname for Gustave who is a cowboy in the Far West. A bandit who holds up banks in the day and robs trains in the night. But what Gus loves most is chasing girls. Here he is on horseback, riding at full gallop and spitting little clouds of despair in his wake. This is what love is, too! Promises, hours of waiting and doubts. Christophe Blain casts a new light on the western men and women and makes the readers feel the utter loneliness of two lovers lost in a wild world.

"Ma maman est en Amérique" (Z: Emile Bravo, T: Jean Regnaud) Gallimard
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1548...falo-Bill.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782070572991/alb.htm
Jean, an adorable little boy, relates his daily life and small adventures with his sour-tempered teacher, his busy dad, his nanny Yvette (the queen of iced chocolate), his neighbour Michèle (whose parents own a kennel) and his little brother (with whom he keeps fighting) ... all the small and funny things that seem to make of him an ordinary boy. But Jean feels like a great emptiness inside ... though he tries to avoid the question: "Where is my mum?" With sensitivity and emotion, but never lapsing into melodrama, Bravo and Regnaud tell their story and remind us that children are not the only ones who'd rather invent some imaginary story than cope with reality ...

"Baudelaire" (Z: Daniel Casanave, T: Noël Tuot) Les Rêveurs
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1487...audelaire.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782912747242/alb.htm
If Charles Baudelaire was undoubtedly one of the best French poets, he was also a downright misanthropist and a weird guy ... And Casanave and Tuot know it pretty well. So they decided to present the touchy character without focusing on literary history and from the totally unexpected point of view of a crazy uchronia. Their story takes the shape of a comical travel between Earth and Heaven, full of insolence and freedom of imagination that could materialize in no other medium than the comic book ... Beneath the absurd irony, the two authors deliver some beautiful aphorisms about life, death and love.

    "Kiki de Montparnasse" (Z: Catel, T: José-Louis Bocquet) écritures/Casterman
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1506...tparnasse.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782203396210/alb.htm
In 1913, an unpolished young girl who feeds on garlic sausage and red wine leaves her native Burgundy and settles in Paris. Nothing about her suggested that she might achieve an artistic career, but the young girl has the intuition of a coquette and knows how to identify the talented painters who will make her pretty and give her eternity. This first graphic biography of Kiki de Montparnasse by Catel and Bocquet plunges the readers in the libertine Paris of the 20s and relates the rise and fall of a real star with emotion.

"La véritable histoire de Futuropolis" (Z+T: Florence Cestac) Dargaud
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1607...olis-(La).html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782205059113/alb.htm
This is the fabulous story of two hippies without a penny who revolutionized the comic book world in France in the 70s. A total immersion in the original, sometimes wretched and often fantastic universe of the 9th art and an irresistible collection of portraits, including collectors and comic book authors. Florence Cestac reveals the ascension of a venture that started with nothing and became a reference, in parallel to a love story that starts falling apart. A book full of humour and tenderness.

"Construire un feu" (Z+T: Christophe Chabouté) Vents d'Ouest
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1617...re-un-feu.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782749303505/alb.htm
In the far north of Canada, at the outermost bounds of Alaska, a man travels with his dog, regardless of danger. He defies storms. He thinks he is stronger than the elements and more clever than the elders who warned him that he took an impossible challenge. Is he going to make it? Those who read Jack London can guess. Construire un feu is an icy tale. The story of a man faced with his destiny, his pride. Christophe Chabouté depicts like no other the sounds ot he steps in the snow, the trees crackling, the branches breaking and the cold. The smell, the colour and the pain of the cold. And of course, the lethal danger it entails.

"Le Grand Autre" (Z+T: Ludovic Debeurme) Cornélius
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782915492354/alb.htm
Touched by the cold wings of an angel of strangeness, Ludovic Debeurme hasn't changed «subject» as he undoubtedly produced a new variation on his own autobiographical obsessions - even though he manages to hide them under the veil of unbridled dream and fantasy with sophistication and modesty. Influenced by his reading of Lacan, this paradoxically cruel and moving story inspires the artist (who won an essential award in 2007 for Lucille) with loads of unforgettable images. Thus he honestly carries on with the fascinating exploration of his personal mythology and builds a most singular work.

"Journal d'un fantôme" (Z+T: Nicolas De Crécy) Futuropolis
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1482...fant%F4me.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782754800624/alb.htm
An in-depth reflection about the trials and tribulations of the creative process as well as an amused depiction of the fears and joys of travel, Nicolas de Crécy shows himself openly as he really is and as he feels the world, half way between dream and reality. His dialogue on a plane with a barely sketched ghostly figure baptized the shape expresses the difficulties met with the question of representation as well as the tensions between the inside and the outside that torment every artist. A brilliant graphic designer, Nicolas de Crécy invents a new form of factional comic book under the very eyes of the readers.

"Chroniques birmanes" (Z+T: Guy Delisle) Shampooing/Delcourt
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1648...-birmanes.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782756009339/alb.htm
This is an incredible coincidence: as the Burmese military junta repressed the demonstrations in Rangoon, came out Chroniques birmanes, a new real-life story by Guy Delisle who spent 14 months in Burma along with his wife, a doctor in a humanitarian organization, and their baby son, Louis. Guy Delisle delivers a surprising account that is as captivating as Pyongyang and Shenzen. He depicts the totalitarian system (Peace Nobel prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi is still kept prisoner over there) and gives a detailed and humorous evocation of his daily life with its share of little worries that one would never imagine in a democratic country.A fascinating and appalling book.

"Jérôme K. Jérôme Bloche: Fin de contrat" (Z+T: Alain Dodier) Dupuis Repérages
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-51-B...__4.html#67408
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782800139913/alb.htm
Beneath his awkward Hulot-like appearance, Jérôme K. Jérôme Bloche is a young detective who is both dreamy and brave, both clumsy and clever. In this twentieth tome, which constitutes a two-part with the former one, the admirer of Humphrey Bogart is mistaken for a contract killer because of a wrong telephone number. His investigation leads him to the real killer, a lover of reptiles which he will have to mix with against his will. Thanks to this intelligent plot that does not avoid some topical issues (such as domestic abuse), the readers are delighted to experience once again the Parisian world of Jérôme ...

"XIII: La version Irlandaise" (Z: Jean Giraud, T: Jean Van Hamme) Dargaud
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-7-BD-XIII__5.html#68485
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782505001317/alb.htm
This comic book which explains, outside the traditional cycle, why Jason Fly (aka XIII) joined the CIA is a real event. Because it reveals a secret. But also because it is illustrated by a master, Jean Giraud (aka Moebius). Jean Van Hamme takes us back in the 80s in Belfast, when the son of an IRA member gets involved against his will in an attack whose stakes overtake him. The young man finds refuge and starts studying in the USA where he meets Jason Fly whose fate is about to change course. Uniting two of the most renowned French-speaking comic book authors, this book, with a sound script and amazing drawings, comes as a real surprise.

"Faire semblant c'est mentir" (Z+T: Dominique Goblet) L'Association
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1534...st-mentir.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782844142337/alb.htm
It took Belgian cartoonist Dominique Goblet twelve years to complete such an introspection. She tells about the difficulty of settling in a stable relationship and expresses the ambivalence of her feelings towards a violent and pathetic father with gorgeous simplicity. A singular combination of lightness and determination, her story builds up through a succession of chapters of different lengths and tones and resorts to various devices (oil-paper, soft lead pencils ... )

"Le Roman de Renart" (Z+T: Bruno Heitz) Fétiche/Gallimard
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782070610150/alb.htm
We all know about Reynard, the witty fox that likes to fool his crual mate Isegrim the wolf, whom neither the bear nor the boar dare confront. One thousand years after Reynard first appeared, Bruno Heitz (who also designed the series Un privé à la cambrousse) revisits this medieval tale - a satire of feudal society - through a very personal tone and in a singular shape, with a false naivety to the great delight of adults.

"Le dernier mousquetaire" (Z+T: Jason) Carabas
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1636...aire-(Le).html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782351002858/alb.htm
When the world of the Three Musketeers crashes into the one of Flash Gordon, it results in an adventure story that is both funny and melancholy, both simple and fantastic, a story in the peculiar way of Norwegian cartoonist Jason. Remarkably constant in the quality of his stories, after Hemingway and I killed Adolf Hitler, he chose to experiment a singular combination of popular literature and psychology. This is a last struggle for the heroes of our childhood in a book populated with pitiful and moving characters such as a depressive tyrant in search of his subjects' recognition.

"Djinn Djinn" (Z+T: Ralf König) Glénat
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1497...inn-Djinn.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/Djinn%20Djinn/fiche_serie.htm
Isaak the Jew has come back from Baghdad in a caravan loaded with presents that Caliph Harûn Ar Rashid, the chief of the believers, intends to offer to Charlemagne, the chief of the Franks: amidst the spices, the soaps, the perfumes and the rich carpets, there lays an old magic teapot from the desertic province of Dhôdhân ... Thirteen centuries later, the teapot lands in a shared flat in Cologne ... Alas! The genie who comes out of the teapot when you rub it up is no beautiful and obedient young man, but rather a dark and harsh man, a love warrior! By revisiting in a personal way the Arabian nights mythology, Ralf König does not only point out the culture shock; he also achieves one of his best books, in an even combination of epic and humour.

"Donjon Parade: Technique Grogro" (Z: Manu Larcenet, T: Joann Sfar & Lewis Trondheim) Delcourt
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-482-...ade.html#63845
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782756004778/alb.htm
Will monster Grogro, who loves to drink beer and eat rabbits, reveal the secret of his (digestive) combat technique, as he is bribed by three desperate warriors who'd do anything to stop the prophecy that announces the extinction of their species? A rejoicing and regressive reading recreation, this new episode of the Donjon Parade series is a brilliant contribution of the Larcenet-Sfar-Trondheim threesome to entertainement comic books ...

"Vilebrequin" (Z: Obion, T: Arnaud Le Gouëfflec) Kstr/Casterman
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1555...lebrequin.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782203003903/alb.htm
Just like in Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief, the catlike Vilebrequin is a thief that wears a dark and tight suit and only acts in the night. From the first page, this acrobat, speaking in the first person and in a colourful and funny style, lists the little habits, faults and fantasies characterizing the owners of safes; thus he partly exonerates himself from his deeds. But one day, as he opens another safe, he finds a bone or more exactly a sponge. This is the beginning of an excruciating obsession. A nod to Louis Malle's Voleur, this entertaining book is breathtaking.

"Fido face à son destin" (Z+T: Sébastien Lumineau) Shampooing/Delcourt
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1581...on-destin.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782756006345/alb.htm
The fate of Fido, a street dog, is to endlessly bump ("bing!") into the same streetlamp. When he goes about his business, when he runs after a cat or is run after by a big dog that is much stronger than he is, it never fails: "Bing!". In about one hundred pages, Sébastien Lumineau explores the constraint which consists in repeating the same event ("Bing!") and in gradually and skilfully complexifying the interactions between the characters. First, Fido is alone with the streetlamp, then comes a big dog, then a bitch, then a cat. One has to savour this brilliant framework of coloured strips: a zany exercise in style that is perfectly accomplished. "Bing!"

"La topographie interne du M" (Z+T: Jean-Christophe Menu) Les Requins Marteaux
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782849610381/alb.htm
The salvation of the graphic designer, the Maquintoche (for MacIntosh computer) enclose a crazy world full of industrious creatures and may hide, who knows, a soul ... Conceived for a computer magazine, the collected strips recall Mandryka's Concombre masqué with the flashy colours and the fancy world that gradually builds up. The readers proceed to the rhythm of Jean-Christophe Menu's doubts and moods although he manages to transcend the autobiographical experience and reach the poetry of the classic Belgian comic books.

"Exit Wounds" (Z+T: Rutu Modan) Actes Sud BD
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782742771073/alb.htm
Israel, 2002. United against their will by the unknown identity of a victim in a kamikaze attack, Numi and Koby lead an investigation to try and find a man - the lover of the victim and father of Koby. Through their desperate search, punctuated with good and bad surprises, Rutu Modan (b. 1966) depicts a society that has lost ist points of references and on a more symbolical level, its fathers ... This graphic novel of minimalist style gives a humanist account of life in the Near East through the prism of fiction.

"Chaque chose" (Z+T: Julien Néel) Gallimard/Bayou
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1453...que-chose.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782070572977/alb.htm
Facing his father's illness, a young cartoonist remembers the peculiar holidays they used to spend together. Indeed, as a kid, he would follow him on his promotional tours, which were the occasion for free vacation. Years later, these privileged moments make full sense as death gets closer ... Widely autobiographical, Chaque chose is a delicate story which deals with the innocence of childhood as well as the issue of filiation. Born in 1976, Julien Neel (who also conceived the successful Lou series) delivers a moving and well structured work.

"Trois ombres" (Z+T: Cyril Pedrosa) Shampooing/Delcourt
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1621...is-ombres.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782756004709/alb.htm
Isolated from the world and the misfortunes, Joachim and his parents live peacefully at the bottom of the hills until the shadows of three mysterious horsemen appear and disrupt everything. Joachim's fate is immediately turned upside down. To escape the threat of the three shadows, he has only two alternatives left: escape or submit. Of course his father chooses the first option and throws himself wholeheartedly into a long and dangerous travel with an uncertain end. A magnificent parable on the utterly painful death of a child, this initiatory tale relies on an amazingly dynamic graphic style.

    "R.G." (Z: Frederik Peeters, T: Pierre Dragon) Bayou/Gallimard
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-15328-BD-RG.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782070579075/alb.htm
What do we know about the policemen's lives, except for the clichés found in detective stories? This very realist account plunges the readers into a detective's daily life and discloses his secrets: the hideouts, the hours spent in unmarked vans, the snaps taken with telephoto lens and the tailing ... These particularly impressive stories are inspired from a veteran of the secret police. A real-life experience thanks to Pierre Dragon's script and the striking drawings of Frederik Peeters who produced one of his most unexpected books.

"Le Feul" (Z: Frédéric Peynet, T: Jean-Charles Gaudin) Soleil
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-11488-BD-Feul-(Le).html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782845659865/alb.htm
The Feul is a disease that decimates the Oldis, a tribe that chiefly feeds on fish. And the river water is supposed to be the main factor of contamination. To try and find the origin of the curse, the Oldis have to ally with a rival tribe, the Bourouwn. Throughout their travels, they will meet other tribes with different ways of life and different visions of the world. These encounters and the sharing of common pains will teach them greater understanding and tolerance. A strong symbol in this humanist tale, a hymn to friendship between the peoples.

"Moi Je et caetera" (Z+T: Aude Picault) Warum
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782915920161/alb.htm
In a second volume full of humour and tenderness, Aude Picault makes a mockery of her daily life with a charming graphic style that is as brilliant as expressive. Above all, the cartoonist reaches a universal meaning when she shares parts of her life as a modern young woman with the readers. A life made of loneliness, poor or exciting encounters, ordinary or unforgettable evenings, great or little joys, well just life as it goes! Picault reasserts her status as an emerging talented author: just like their elders, the leaders of the «nouvelle bande dessinée» have made more of them ...

"L'éléphant" (Z+T: Isabelle Pralong) Vertige Graphic
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782849990476/alb.htm
With your job as a wardrobe master, your husband and kids, you live an ordinary and happy life. Until the hospital calls to tell you that your father is in a coma. A father you don't even know, since he has deserted your life from the start. How do you cope with this sudden comeback and impending death? This is what Isabelle Pralong relates in a series of short chapters deprived of pathos and in a graphic style one would describe as expressive. From the initial denial to the reconciliation with the stranger and finally with herself, everything is said with outstanding modesty and soundness in this beautiful book.

"La Marie en plastique" (Z: David Prudhomme, T: Pascal Rabaté) Futuropolis
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1401...ique-(La).html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782754800600/alb.htm
Under the same roof of a provincial house live the three generations of a family. The father is a craftsman, the mother is a housewife and the two kids are ordinary. It is quite different for the grandparents on the mother's side. He hates priests whereas she comes back from Lourdes with a plastic statue of the Virgin Mary in her luggage. They soon quarrel fiercely and the whole family can enjoy the show ... The rest of the story, among which a miracle and a solemn communion dinner, is both hilarious and derisory. Rabaté succeeded in making moments that we all intimately know as boring and insignificant, captivating and above all, funny. David Prudhomme illustrates the story with a clarity and fluidity that never prevent daring innovations in terms of colours and structure.

"Pascal Brutal" (Z+T: Riad Sattouf) Fluide Glacial
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1377...al-brutal.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/Pascal%20Brutal/fiche_serie.htm
In a close future ruled by ultraliberalism and consumption (both sexual and material), a man - wearing Torsion sneakers and a silver chain bracelet which twinkles under the clubs' spotlights as he lasciviously dances - asserts his identity as an alpha male, half way between the ape and the amoeba: meet Pascal Brutal! Punctuated with ironical lines, this unexpected merging of Mad Max and Marseilles rap hit «Tu danses le Mia» makes Riad Sattouf (b. 1978) one of the most hilarious satirists of his generation.

"La vie secrète des jeunes" (Z+T: Riad Sattouf) L'Association
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1652...es-jeunes.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/Pascal%20Brutal/fiche_serie.htm
Published weekly in Charlie Hebdo, the chronicles collected in this book are like snapshots of Parisian people taken from real life by Riad Sattouf who gradually refines his satirical portrait of today's urban youth, after Retour au Collège. A genius in caricatures, Sattouf does not spare any category of people and increases the impact of his stories, certified to be true, by his sense of detail and his faithful transcription of an ever-changing language.

"Les cités obscures: La Théorie du grain de sable" (Z: François Schuiten, T: Benoît Peeters) Casterman
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-414-...__2.html#66174
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782203343238/alb.htm
Heirs to Jules Vernes and Franz Kafka but also to Jorge Luis Borges and Julien Gracq, Schuiten and Peeters have their readers explore once again the astonishing parallel world of the Cities of the Fantastic. If they go back in time and space by choosing Brüsel as a background, they also venture on new imaginary lands as they conjure up some key figures of their cycle (such as Constant Abel and Mary Van Rathen) and create new strong characters such as Gholam Mortiza Khan ... This first episode of a promising two-part work is a turning point, as a touch of humour and sensuality is added.

"Le Chat du rabbin" (Z+T: Joann Sfar) Poisson Pilote/Dargaud
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-2313...Le).html#59668
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782205058680/alb.htm
This cat who can speak since he swallowed a parrot, this cat who asks his master about God, this cat who questions the meaning of life, this cat who is among the most famous cats of modern comic books, this very cat continues to surprise us, just like his creator, the talented and prolific Joann Sfar ... A funny and loving moralist when the fancy takes him, the inveterate storyteller satirizes the stupidity and racist bias of certain Europeans (among which a famous reporter in knickerbockers!) but never forgets to make the readers dream and laugh.

"Petite histoire des colonies françaises" (Z: Otto T., T: Grégory Jarry) Flblb
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1390...n%E7aises.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782205058680/alb.htm
Through this impertinent historical saga presented by a hilarious caricature of Général de Gaulle, Grégory Jarry and Otto T. aim at assessing the "positive impact" of French colonization in their own way ... In the first tome, they ironically stated that the colonies on the American continent had allowed the French people to eat lemons and bananas at any time of the year for generations. Now the authors tackle the issue of French imperialism in Africa and Asia. With a sense of the grotesque that sometimes recalls Ubu, this irreverent satire undermines the most ethnocentric ideas with humour but only and always relies on true facts.

"Adèle Blanc-Sec" (Z+T: Jacques Tardi) Casterman
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-177-...__3.html#68049
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782203007369/alb.htm
What a pleasure to get lost in this narrative and visual maze in which the author himself seems to take a mischievous delight in having his own mutilated and disfigured characters get lost! Will Adèle Blanc-Sec unravel the mysterious plot hatched in the dark by a worrying secret society? What is the recipe of Dr Chou's elixir? Whom does the cut hand that appears everywhere in Paris belong to? Did Gilbert the dog have enough to eat? Will Honoré come back home? It doesn't matter in the end, as long as Tardi keeps rejoicing us with his witty lines and freaky faces ...

    "Ile Bourbon 1730" (Z+T: Lewis Trondheim, T: Appollo) Shampooing/Delcourt
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1472...rbon-1730.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782756006567/alb.htm
Who would venture to say that historical comic books are doomed to unimaginative didacticism and hackneyed serialized stories after having read this voluminous graphic novel? Not only does Trondheim contradict such preconceived ideas in a book that mixes weird birds, slave traders and pirates, but he also initiates, although he might not look like doing it, a new stylistic genre, experimenting and searching for new codes of graphic representation and using the captivating and well informed story of scriptwriter Appolo, who also wrote La Grippe coloniale among others.

"Le Gros Lot" (Z+T: Nikola Witko) Carabas
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1589...ly-Baraka.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782351002636/alb.htm
«Not everyone can afford to win the lottery» some cynics pretend. This is more or less what the 80 pages of this eventful and picaresque story illustrate. The unfortunate Willy finally understands that he lost everything the day he got the jackpot! If Nicolas Witko (a mainstay of Requins Marteaux) mocks male cowardice and consumerist excesses with an inimitable sense of derision and grotesque, he will surprise his readers with a conclusion worthy of Capra's best films!

Die nominierten Comics aus den USA und anderen englischsprachigen Ländern:

"En route pour le New Jersey" (Z+T: Peter Bagge) Rackham
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1352...y-Bradley.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782878271058/alb.htm
With his crazy girlfriend Lisa still clinging to him, Buddy goes back to New Jersey and settles in the family house after several years of boozy parties and temp jobs in Seattle. Is it the beginning of the age of reason for this immature dumb guy, the offshoot of a poor America? After En route pour Seattle, here is the sequel to Buddy Bradley's adventures, as he carries his hysterical family and stupid friends like a millstone round his neck. The portrait of a generation, the Bradley story depicts a hilarious and convincing picture of American society in the 90s.

"Cancer and the City" (Z+T: Marisa Acocella Marchetto) L'Iconoclaste
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1649...-the-city.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782913366176/alb.htm
Cancer Vixen is the true story of an eleven-month struggle against cancer, an issue approached with humour, tenderness and love by a fashion addict cartoonist. In her comic book version of Sex and the City, she deals with breast cancer with scathing and unconventional irony. The book teaches the readers a real lesson for life as the heroine directly addresses the cancerous cells (and tells them a few weeks before her wedding: « Now is not a good time ») and proclaims in the last page that she is happy to be alive. A portion of the book sales is donated to Gustave Roussy Cancer Centre in Villejuif.

"Epuisé" (Z+T: Joe Matt) Le Seuil
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-16222-BD-Epuise.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782913366176/alb.htm
After a focus on his childhood days (Les Kids), here is the sequel to the adventures of Joe who is stingy and never stops moaning, but you'll still come to like him. As he broke up with Trish, he found refuge in acute collecting mania and frentic onanism ... Joe Matt carries on with his uncompromising self-portrait, constantly oscillating between hilarious self-denigration and expression of a darker and deeper distress. A real purple patch: the captivating desultory conversation with his two brilliant friends and colleagues, Seth and Chester Brown.

"Château l'attente" (Z+T: Linda Medley) çà et là
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1671...l-attente.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782916207223/alb.htm
Fairy tales and heroic fantasy epics are most often written by male authors. But what would a story as imaginative as The Lord of the Rings be like if it were written by a woman? Linda Medley gives us the answer in Castle Waiting ... Far from just being a sequel to the Sleeping Beauty theme, this bulky graphic novel hides behind the ludicrous sprites and evil witches, masses of issues that are much less imaginary, like domestic violence and accepting differences.

"Là où vont nos pères" (Z+T: Shaun Tan) Dargaud
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1490...nos-peres.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782205059700/alb.htm
A man arrives in a strange country and tries to get used to the strange life and habits of the inhabitants. He left his wife and kids behind him so he could give them a better life ... Shaun Tan, an Australian cartoonist born in 1974, deals with the issue of immigration in a metaphorical way and conjures up a phantasmagorical imagery to do so. It results in a universal story for anyone can identify to the man's existence. The readers experience through his eyes the sometimes painful, sometimes exciting process of adaptation to another culture.

"Acme Novelty Library" (Z+T: Chris Ware) Delcourt
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-16537-BD-Acme.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782756006369/alb.htm
Chris Ware's books are easy to recognize. Controlled by the author in every detail, they invite the readers to enter a labyrinthine world populated with lonely characters who live their lives haunted by regret and frustration. A dazzling formal work and a taste for skilfull and entretaining narrative structures are the hallmarks of Chris Ware who also distinguishes by his predilection for American classics from the 20s and his sardonic humour.

"American Born Chinese" (Z+T: Gene Luen Yang) Dargaud
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1612...n-Chinese.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782205059588/alb.htm
In a sophisticated and simple style, Gene Luen Yang intertwines three narrative threads to relate his own story. The legendary tale of the Monkey-King, the lord of the mountain, flowers and fruits, who has to accept himself as a monkey to be happy; the story of Jin Wang, a young boy of Chinese origin who has to face the mockery and prejudice of his schoolmates in a Californian school; and finally, the story of Chin-Kee who is the ultimate Chinese stereotype and embodies all the worst racist ideas inherited from the Yelow Peril. Each of these stories finally merge into one and tackle the issues of integration and self-acceptance from a surprising point of view.

    Die nominierten Mangas:

"Journal d'une disparition" (Z+T: Hideo Azuma) Kana
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1471...sparition.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782505000303/alb.htm
A successful cartoonist born in 1950, Hideo Azuma recalls some of the most surprising years of his existence: first a homeless person, then a plumber, he ended in a psychiatric hospital to try and cure his alcoholism. He relates with sound humour and distance the path he followed as he constantly tried to escape professional, spousal and social constraints. Never lapsing into melodrama although the subject is not light at all and illustrated with warm drawings, Journal d'une disparition is the amazing portrait of a Japanese man.

"Amer béton - Intégrale" (Z+T: Taiyo Matsumoto) Tonkam
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-3770...ton.html#62451
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782759500079/alb.htm
The unpublished full version of Taiyo Matsumoto's masterpiece in French and as it was originally published in Japan in 1993, Amer Béton relates the lives of two street kids roaming in Tokyo which transformed into a gigantic run-down amusement park. This cult book by one of the most talented cartoonists of his generation (he also drew Gogo Monster) transcends the frontiers in a style that often calls to mind an Argentine comic book master: José Muñoz! In 2007, Amer Béton was also adapted as a feature-length animation film, designed by the flower of the Japanese animators.

"Death Note" (Z: Takeshi Obata, T: Tsugumi Ohba) Kana
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1470...eath-note.html
A brilliant student, Light Yamagami lay hands on a death notebook by which he can kill anyone by just writing down their name on it. Without scruples, Light uses it to build a supposedly ideal society. But the unexplained deaths puzzle the police who call on a super detective, the mysterious L. Between the two men begins an incredible race against death. Dark and captivating, Death Note is a thriller that is outstandingly well put together and that won a wide readership in Japan as well as in France.

"Helter Skelter" (Z+T: Kyôko Okazaki) Sakka/Casterman
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782203002814/alb.htm
As a model who's reached the summits of fame, Lili is as beautiful as she is unbearable. Behind her fierce selfishness, the star hides a dreadful secret: her beauty is purely artificial and causes her greater and greater suffering. The woman and sex object finally rebels and transforms into a vengeful and destructive creature ... A story of extreme singulaity in the worldwide comic book landscape, Helter Skelter is Kyôko Okazaki's masterpiece. She was born in 1966 and really brought major changes to Japanese comic books with unbridled narratives that lay bare the human soul.

    Angoulême 2008

    Neuausgaben von Comic-Klassikern

"Orfi aux enfers" (Z+T: Dino Buzzati) Actes Sud BD
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782742768530/alb.htm
One often wonders what great writers would have drawn and written if they had ever conceived a comic book: in Orfi aux enfers (Poema a fumetti), one realizes that the author of The Tartar Steppe envisaged the specifities of the 9th art as a way of exploring his own imagination. By freely revisiting the myth of Orpheus (but in a different style from Cocteau's film), Dino Buzatti (1906-1972) draws an unexpected potential from the poetic fusion of words and images and delivers a piece of such singularity and originality that it has remained incredibly amazing and innovating till today.
(In Deutschland 1970 als "Orphi und Eura" erschienen. http://www.comicguide.de/php/detail....&display=short )

"Spirou et Fantasio", L'intégrale (Z+T: André Franquin) Dupuis
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1442...Dupuis-2).html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782800139388/alb.htm
The adventures of Spirou, a masterpiece among French-language comic books, had never gotten such a perfect edition before! As each volume comes with a critical apparatus that is richly illustrated with rare drawings and the lines and colours are fully restored, Dupuis publishers not only delight the nostalgic baby boomers, but also allow the great Franquin to remain accessible to younger generations who hardly know the tremendous work of this genius, in spite of the fame of Gaston Lagaffe and Marsupilami.

"Moomin" (Z+T: Tove Jansson) Le Petit Lézard
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1644...tures-de).html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782353480012/alb.htm
Finnish artist Tove Jansson (1914-2001) was a painter and an illustrator, but also the author of the adventures of Moomin the Troll, a character she invented during World War 2 to bring dream and comfort to the children. It has been read all over the worl since and is considered to be a classic. This fantasy and humorous story was first adapted as a comic book by Tove Jansson herself, later replaced by her brother Lars. This perfectly edited first volume allows the readers to jump into a lively and unpredictable world populated with strange, though immediately familiar, creatures (Snorks, Hatifnattes, a gluttonous Stinky who smells awfully bad...). Recommended for children of all ages!

"L'art attentat" (Z+T: Francis Masse) Le Seuil
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1529...ntat-(L-).html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782020901697/alb.htm
A book by Francis Masse is quite an event in itself. Because the author is among the most important ones in the French-speaking comic book world. Among the most innovative, the most clever and the most metaphysical ones. Even if this new book isn't really new, as it only collects former works published in the newspapers, it allows the humorist, form inventor, philosopher and semiologist to come out of a purgatory that he did not deserve. Angoulême is glad to help and bring him back to the forefront, to the great delight of his admirers, among which Art Spiegelman and Terry Gilliam.

"Mes problèmes avec les femmes" (Z+T: Robert Crumb) Cornélius
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1646...es-femmes.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782915492309/alb.htm
The title - My Problems with Women - tells everything about the book which collects all the short stories by the American master dealing with his obsession for a certain type of woman. He explores some marking episodes of his younger life and goes back over the 60s when he reached worldwide fame. He also reveals moments of his intimate life. The sometimes embarrassing honesty of Crumb's self-analysis is counterbalanced by his scathing humour, which is first brought against the author and narrator before being transcended in a graphic work of astounding virtuosity.

"Je ne suis pas n'importe qui" (Z+T: Jules Feiffer) Futuropolis
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1662...orte-qui-.html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782754801508/alb.htm
For sure Jules Feiffer is not a nobody! He worked with Will Eisner on The Spirit, wrote novels and films for Mike Nichols and Alain Resnais ... But above all, he has been drawing cartoons for American newspapers for over 40 years and his satirical work inspired Georges Wolinski and Claire Brétécher in France. This album collects short stories in which ordinary characters get trapped in social situations they cannot control and reads in French for the very first time in four decades. At last, the French readers may enjoy the wit and the brilliant drawings of a moralist who never tired of mocking the faults of his contemporaries.

"Un gentil garçon" (Z+T: Shinichi Abe) Cornélius
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782915492286/alb.htm
As a direct heir to Yoshiharu Tsuge (L'Homme sans talent), Shinichi Abe is a short story writer of the first rank, the equivalent of Raymond Carver (Short Cuts) in the comic book field, as they both convey the same intensity, the same unfathomable human depth, behind the apparent passivity of their characters. In short stories of autobiographical inspiration, which all date back to the 70s, Abe draws the picture of a bohemian life that is sometimes painful and in which men and women look for a sparkle of happiness in uncertain embraces. Sad and beautiful.

    "L'âme du Kyudo" (Z+T: Hiroshi Hirata) Akata/Delcourt
    http://www.bedetheque.com/serie-1580...yudo-(L-).html
    http://www.bdnet.com/9782756006307/alb.htm
In feudal Japan, a young bowman tries everything to break the record of Toshiya, a competition that consists in throwing the greatest amount of arrows on a 120m distance and for 24 hours long. But do his tremendous efforts to win really make sense? What can a pennyless samurai do except play the game of the mighty? As a veteran of Japanese comic books, Hiroshi Hirata draws like no others the warriors of ancient times as noble and masculine figures, while criticizing the institutionalized slavery of the lower castes. A powerful book.
