Mignola and... Dracula? It's not what you think...

Today I had a really brief call with Mike because we were both too busy to talk - and the good news is that he told me that he's more than halfway done with The Ghoul, his entry in the upcoming Dark Horse Book of the Dead. Even better, once he's done with The Ghoul, he'll begin, in earnest, on The Island, the looooong awaited sequel to The Third Wish. It'll take some time to get that book done, but sometime in 2005 you'll be seeing that story. I'd promise, but I've been wrong before, so my promises ain't what they used to be. Still, very shortly you'll have more Hellboy from Mike.
And after The Island? Well, it's been widely discussed elsewhere, so I should spell it all out here - Mike's very eager to launch a new project, to tell a totally different kind of story, and so after The Island, he'll be working on a massive vampire epic, which he has more than once refered to as "my Dracula." By that he does not mean a Dracula adaptation - he's been there - or a retelling, or anything of the sort. It will be a sort of grand vampire novel, using the vampire to tell a great story, and adding to the lore as best as he is able.
What has some Hellboy fans fainting is the announcement that while Mike works on this book, Hellboy's adventures will continue - with another artist. Lee Bermejo has already been handed the script for the first of what should add up to eighteen issues of Hellboy which he'll be drawing. Mike wrote the story specifically for Lee, and will be working closely with him on the layouts, as well as providing character designs. The decision to hire Lee for this job came about somewhat magically, a great moment of synchronicity, and Lee is, I believe, the perfect guy for it - something I decided a couple hours after meeting him. I hope everybody checks out this new version of Hellboy - still many many moons away right now - and that you agree with me and Mike.
In the meantime, we've finished up Odder Jobs, the second collection of prose Hellboy stories, which includes entries from Guillermo del Toro, Tom Sniegoski, Charles de Lint, Sharyn McCrumb, Frank Darabont, and ... well, me. At 256 pages, this one weighs in way over the previous volume, and contains a bunch of new Mignola drawings.
