THE FILTH #1 (of 13)
written by Grant Morrison
illustrated by Chris Weston and Gary Erskine
colours by Matt Hollingsworth
How was this difficult to understand?
There was a whole section of TRANSMET, around the late 30's,
that was strongly influenced by the work of British maverick writer/
"comedian" Chris Morris, particularly his BLUE JAM radio show. The
only one who got it -- or, at least, the only one who called me on it --
was Grant Morrison. Possibly because he was the one who made
me listen to it. The opening sequences of THE FILTH #1, the surreal
conversations with their slightly uncomfortable content, strongly
reflect the same influence. Surreal in its original definition of
super-real,
convincing yet wrong, more real than reality in its depiction of a world's
underside.
That's why Chris Weston, Gary Erskine and Matt Hollingsworth are
the perfect artists for THE FILTH. They make a world you can pick up
and turn in your hands. Super-real. Things are what they are. Nothing
confusing about it at all.
The plot? This is remarkably simple.
Slade is a retired officer of a secret operation called The Hand. So
secret that all the people of the Earth are conditioned from birth to not
notice them. So secret that Slade has had a new personality and
memory imposed upon his own as a condition of his retirement. But
something has happened. His retirement personality is given an
emergency purge by another Hand officer called Nil, and he's being
raced back into active duty, too fast for him to get a handle on his
original memories. Meanwhile, a killer and a woman being used as
a remote-controlled agent by a mad billionaire are haggling over a
look at a complex miniature artificial life experiment, complete with
two billion sentient lifeforms, before the killer annihilates it...
How is that hard to follow?
It doesn't even try to take itself seriously. It's relaxed and fun Morrison
with some vodka, talking shit in the sunshine. The "Gerry Anderson"
moment promised in his PR is riotous, with its THUNDERBIRDSy
Hand-Mobile and the UFO electrostatic wig. Doesn't matter if you
don't get the reference. It's just funny. A blue toupee that shields
>from electromagnetic attack -- one step up from a tinfoil helmet.
It's the best download from Morrison's head since THE INVISIBLES
finished, and I think it's going to be a lot more cohesive and satisfying.
You should own a copy.
