    Was genau meinst du?

So tut man seinem Idol keinen Gefallen.

Jetzt versteh ich, was du meinst.

    @PachiPa
Victors Motivation behandeln.

    http://june-edenwrites.tumblr.com/po...ue-handling-of

My Theory Behind the Writers’ Unique Handling of Yuri and Victor’s Relationship in YOI

TL;DR: The writers’ intentions, in my opinion, with the creation of Yuuri and Victor’s relationship was not to just please the fangirls; but to send an important, broader message out to its general audience. Through the use of repetition, and deliberately choosing not to label the relationship, the writers wanted people to see that homosexuality could be - if you take a step back and not let your personal bias influence your view - a pure and loving thing like its heterosexual counterpart.

You can also check out my Yuuri Katsuki character study here: http://june-edenwrites.tumblr.com/po...haracter-study

I think we all can agree that there is something distinctively differentabout Yuri on Ice - at least, when compared to other sports anime. One thing you may have noticed – though it is hard to miss - is the fact that there is a large amount of fanservice between Yuuri and Victor in the series. Honestly, we have enough material to fill an entire series with and we’re only on episode five. Fanservice isn’t a new thing in sports anime. Yuri on Ice, however, just floods us with it, and takes it a step further by having the two characters in question not speak to each other in innuendos, but outright want the other to seduce him.

So, this is a question I poised to myself: why did the writers feel the need to constantly shove Yuuri and Victor’s relationship into our faces?
Was it for the money? No, that is unlikely. Series like Free! and Haikyuu! have done amazingly well, despite having less fanservice in comparison. In fact, a series doesn’t need a ton of fanservice to please the fangirls. Therefore, there was no need for the series to take the fanservice to the level that it did – unless there was a different motive behind it.

That motive, in my opinion, was to influence a certain segment of their audience.
And that segment isn’t the fangirls, but the general viewing audience. The people that don’t necessarily care about ships, and are less inclined to enjoy a series with a homosexual relationship in it.
In other words, the amount of fanservice in the series is meant to desensitize them to the idea of homosexuality through repetition. By doing so, they can present Yuuri and Victor’s relationship in a natural light, not an odd or uncommon one.

Furthermore, the writers’ attempt to gain acceptance for this relationship is shown in their decision not to define it. Yuuri makes it quite clear in episode five that one strict label - like partners, friends, or lovers - cannot accurately define his relationship with Victor. His complex feelings encompass all those labels and more.

Take a seat folks; this is where I get all academic on you.
I studied the concept of labels on this writing blog before, but I want to add more to that subject; so you can have a better understanding of my reasoning in this post. Labels are assigned both a denotative (fixed) meaning and a connotative (suggested) meaning.
Let’s focus, though, on expanding the definition of the word connotative. It can be defined as, “The idea or meaning suggested by or associated with a word or thing.” Therefore, labels can mean different things to different people depending upon that person’s perception of it.
For example, you may view the words “his boyfriend” in a positive light. However, another person might cringe at the same label due to having a negative view of it, most likely influenced by society. If Yuuri and Victor started calling themselves lovers, what do you think would be the reaction of the general audience? They would reject it and quit the series, perhaps.
In yet, despite being adamant about not self-labeling, Yuuri does call what he feels for Victor one thing – love. He claims that if he had to define it, the word he would choose would be love.
Why love? Well, while I don’t have statistics to back up this claim, I do think that people, in general, have a favorable view of love. They may scorn lust, or dislike homosexuality, but love stands above all that. In its most ideal form love is pure.
And this is the message the writers are sending to the audience: that Yuuri and Victor’s relationship is natural, pure, and filled with love.

    Edit:

    @Episode:

By My Side (and Never Leave?) gelistet.

    https://twitter.com/sskz_gsr/status/792022181228130304

    Okay listen, guys.
We’ve currently got 5 Yuri!! On Ice episodes out, and like in all my moments of solitude recently, I’ve been thinking about the show. And quite suddenly, something hit me. There are all these speculations about how it will all end, will Viktor stay/go, will Yuuri follow, will they become a couple, will the fans get an actual kiss? And tbh, as much as I like to think about it, there is just no way to know. It could go in any direction, there’s no way to tell.
But then, I remembered something from the first episode, and I ended up putting together this theory/prediction, that I’m actually really excited about because it seems likely!
I’m sure you all recall Viktor’s performance of ‘Stay Close to Me’
Which we see Minako comment on.

    X
(This program brings out a new dimension in Victor Nikiforov's performance. "Given that he has a million female fans worldwide, he's sure free with his charms.")

She says this and then comments on how the performance would suit a more naive man, which we all agree to be Yuuri.
The program ‘Stay Close to Me’ is a plea to a lover, a desperate appeal to one special person to remain by your side. Since Viktor isn’t known to have a special someone when he skates this, only many many fans, the song doesn’t quite have that personal touch.
But as he skates, we have Yuuri back in Japan doing the same routine.
We don’t see the routine fully skated either by just Victor or Yuuri. We see parts of the routine performed by each of them, and since they’re performed identically (as Yuko says) we can assume that what we see Viktor do, Yuuri is doing it too, and what Yuuri does, Viktor is skating that as well.
So I invite you to look at this part:

    X

Yuuri skates this section of ‘Stay Close to Me’ right by the rink side, directly at Yuko, the only person there.

He skates this routine in honour of his childhood friend, who he most likely had a crush on at some point. Someone who supported his skating and who in a way introduced him to Viktor, through his skating. When Yuuri finished the performance, he says ‘I wanted to get my love for skating back. I thought I could remember how it was when I copied Viktor with you.’
Yuuri admitted at the beginning of the first ep that he wanted to meet Viktor as an equal. Viktor has always been very important to him, and skating his routines with Yuko was always a way for Yuuri to feel closer to him.
So the song ‘Stay Close to Me’ that Yuuri skated was directed at Yuko the person in the rink, but it represented his feelings for Viktor and skating (as the two were completely intertwined, I believe).
That was the difference from when Viktor performed it. I think he saw and understood this when he watched the video of Yuuri skating online, his body making music.
Now, let’s go back to the very beginning of Yuri!! On Ice, the opening scene as a matter of fact.
It’s not unusual for opening scenes to be either flashbacks of a character’s past, or the very end of the story. A bit of a ‘this is where I am now, and I’m going to tell you the story of how it happened’.
I believe YOI actually does both.

    X

We have a younger Viktor skating, who turns into an older Viktor.
The younger, long-haired Viktor is clearly of the past, but it’s not a concrete memory (Yuuri’s there too). It embodies how Yuuri has watched Viktor skate from a young age.

    X

When Young!Viktor skates, he gives Yuuri his back, he doesn’t face him. He doesn’t know him, they’re not on the same level.

    X

But when he moves into the shadow and then we have the older Viktor, he’s looking right at Yuuri. He knows him, acknowledges him.
    X

And for the rest of the routine, he doesn’t take his eyes off of Yuuri. He has eyes only for him.

    X

I think this opening scene has shown us the past and the future. During the scene, Yuuri speaks of Viktor and says “He never fails to surprise me. Ever since I first saw his skating, it’s been an unending chain of surprises”. To me, this sounds like the words of a Yuuri at the end of the series, recounting how much he’s gone through with Viktor.

The opening scene is the Viktuuri relationship before and after.
What most got me about it though, was this part of Viktor’s skating:

    X

I didn’t realise it at first, but it’s exactly the same as when Yuuri skates ‘Stay Close to Me’. We don’t see Viktor perform this part in the contest, we only see it from Yuuri’s performance in the Ice Castle skating ring, but we know this is Viktor’s ‘Stay Close to Me’.

So Viktor is skating this routine in the opening scene, either symbolising the future, or being an actual scene from the future.
And just as when Yuuri skated this part right by Yuko and all that she represented at the time, Viktor is skating this right up to Yuuri.
He reaches his hand out towards the person he wants to stay close to.
    X

And that person is clearly Yuuri, he’s physically there. You can see Viktor’s hands reach for him.

    X

    So my theory is this.
Yuuri skated ‘Stay Close to Me’ the way it should have been skated, a desperate plea to be close to the one person that matters and the love for skating that bloomed from his feelings. Viktor couldn’t quite do that because he didn’t have a special person, and he was losing his way in terms of his love for skating, as Yurio said.
I believe that the opening scene was premonition, and that at the very end of the series, Viktor will skate 'Stay Close to Me’. And do it justice. He will skate the routine that started it all, that brought him to Yuuri, but he will skate it the way it’s meant to be skated. Because by then, Yuuri will be his special someone.
In this intimate setting, a private rink at night, possibly Ice Castle, he will skate for Yuuri to show him his feelings. I believe Viktor is more of a man of action when it comes to things like this. For example, he tells Yuuri at the beach that he’ll work him hard because that’s how he shows his love. I think instead of words maybe, Viktor will show his love to Yuuri, his appreciation for him, by skating 'Stay Close to Me’ for him and only him.
I’m not sure what might follow, but I think it will be a while before we get a confession out of Viktor, and I think this is how it will come to be. Because being able to skate the routine the way it should be would mean that he’s found his way, that Yuuri’s led him there. For these two, it’s love and it’s ice skating. And by skating 'Stay Close to Me’, Viktor will show Yuuri that he’s given him both, and that he wants to stay by his side, hopefully forever.

    Und eine Reaktion darauf:

    I’M SO DANG TORN.
Part of me loves the notion of the parallels between Yuuri’s failed confession to Yuu-chan through the song and successful one to Victor through it, and/or skating it as a pair since it’s to become a duet at the end of the series according to the Oh! SKATE tracklist–but THIS IS REALLY NICE TOO and super believable.
I mean, there’s just so many different ways this could all go, and each one is better than the last, and they all physically pain me because they’re just so fucking beautiful and meaningful, and I need this show to be over because I think it’s k i l l i n g me.

    @Mikku

    Yuri Katsuki isn’t Gay

I will repeat: Yuri Katsuki is not gay.
    BUT HE IS STILL LGBTQIA+!

Yuri Katsuki is more than likely Demisexual or Pansexual.

Demisexual: a person who does not experience sexual attraction/lust unless they form a strong emotional connection. This can be an openness to all genders, or focused on a select gender preference. It is sometimes seen as being halfway between sexual and Asexual (a lack of sexual attraction/interest rather indefinitely)

    VS
Pansexual: a person who does not experience sexual attraction/lust for another person until they find their personality attractive. It’s defined by an openness to all genders, as it is not a factor when considering romantic or sexual partners; not to be confused with Omnisexual (a sexual attraction to all genders that fit their physical preferences, similar to Bisexual)

As a pansexual myself, I see a few hints that could point that way, but personally without more clarification from the character himself I lean Demi. Let me explain, with my experience as pan at least:

Everyone likes to mention how Yuri has never had a girlfriend; even he says so to the viewers during his monologue. It seems he’s not totally aware of his own feelings, and we get the sense that he’s never even been interested in talking to girls like that - for whatever reason he may have.

This does not make him gay.

Yes, he could be an asexual biromantic man who never had the words to explain himself, but there’s hints that show this is more than likely not the case.

He clearly has always admired Victor, as he has been his role model for years. Instead of fanboying at the opportunity to get an autograph or photo with Viktor (like Minami with Yuri), Yuri instead walks away. There’s a lot of reasons to explain this response, especially with him being such an inwardly drawn person, but I’m focusing on the sexuality reasoning: this hints that he doesn’t feel a standard sexual attraction to Victor that would send someone into fanboy mode.
He wants to see Viktor as a person, just like himself, not an unattainable celebrity who he would never know. He feels no need to get his autograph or picture because he’s not interested in the image that is Viktor; this shows us Yuri is interested in what people are inside.

This is later reiterated when he tells Victor “I just want you to be yourself.” He wants to get to know him on a personal level, to see him as an equal, as a human, flaws and all.

It’s relatively clear that, although he has mixed feelings, there is an sort of attraction to Victor in some form. It’s possible that Victor has some of Yuri’s physical preferences even though he’s not quite sexually attracted to him yet - but I find it to be more of a complex ‘holy shit my hero is here, he’s conventionally beautiful and I am a smol raisin in comparison, and he’s so nice and charming and I don’t know how to handle this’
He’s confronted with pushing his hero up on a pedestal, or seeing him as just another human. And he chooses human, and then friend - every time.

When we are introduced to Yuri’s childhood friend, Yuko, it becomes clear that at some point he has had a crush on her. And they were definitely very good friends, and he looked up to her immensely. He finds her beautiful even still, likely on a physical and emotional level. This gives us a hint that he is open to at least males and females, and he was attracted to her because he was able to get to know her so well after becoming friends.

So perhaps the friendship has allowed Yuri to become close, and later attracted to these two people - or perhaps Yuri has a personality type he is attracted too: strong, driven, artist individuals such as Yuko and Viktor (which makes sense: he admires both of these people for such qualities)

In the dance studio, Yuri wishes to move “like a girl.” And during his internal monologue, we learn that Yuri has divided feelings about gender identity and gender norms (which, bravo for the writers for making this a more complex non-binary and not just chalking it up to trans). Yuri is, at this point, not trans based off of what he said he feels. He says it feels right, that it’s much more him: he embraces the masculine and feminine qualities within himself without falling to either societal norm (bravo! bravo!)
This is fairly common among pansexuals, and I have met very few who were Pan and didnt feel some form of androgyne or fluidity in their own gender identity, perhaps due to the fact that we’re almost gender-blind.

As the two characters grow closer in their friendship, Yuri opens up so much, its clearer he is much more attracted to Victor; and he finally drops the bomb that he loves the man in some way, that he’s the first person he’s ever wanted to hold on too. Even more so than his other friends or past crush. It seems we form a friendship, a bond, a want, and love before Yuri develops sexual attraction.

It’s hard to tell whether or not he would be considered Demi or Pan at this point, but whatever Yuri’s sexuality and gender expression is considered, simply calling him homosexual undermines all of the seriously complex character development that the writers have put before us!

    https://twitter.com/MichaelOlympian/...69623423762432

    -----
