Higurashi no Naku Koro ni takes place during June 1983, at a fictional rural village called Hinamizawa (based on the village of Shirakawa, Gifu, a World Heritage Site), which has a population of approximately 2000. The main character, Keiichi Maebara, moves to Hinamizawa and befriends his new classmates Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, and Satoko Hojo. Keiichi joins their after-school club activities, which consist mostly of card and board games (and punishment games for the loser, usually him.) Hinamizawa appears to be a normal, peaceful, rural village to Keiichi. However, the tranquility abruptly ends after the annual Watanagashi Festival, a celebration to commemorate and give thanks to the local god, Oyashiro-sama. Keiichi learns that every year for the past four years, one person has been murdered and another has gone missing on the day of the Watanagashi Festival. Keiichi himself soon becomes drawn into the strange events surrounding the Watanagashi Festival and Oyashiro-sama. In each story arc, he or one of his friends become paranoid, and a crime is committed. Usually, the crime involves the murder of one of their own friends. While it seems impossible to tell their delusions apart from the mystery of Hinamizawa, slowly the truth is revealed.

Wir schreiben das Jahr 2019, 30 Jahre nach der Einführung des “Gesetzes für die Medienverbesserung” (Media Ryokaho). Unter dem Vorwand der Verbesserung werden nun Bücher und andere Publikationen beschlagnahmt und zensiert, d.h. die Mitglieder des Kommitees für die Verbesserung von Medien (Media Ryokaho Iinikai) laufen als Nazis verkleidet durch die Straßen und klauen kleinen Mädchen ihre Märchenbücher. Zum Glück gibt es noch das Gesetz der Informationsfreiheit. Die Bibliotheken Japans haben daher eine bewaffnete Einsatztruppe gebildet, die besagten kleinen Mädchen ihre Märchenbücher wieder zurückgeben. Eines dieser kleinen Lolischicksen war Kasahara Iku , die nun ihrem großen Retter nacheifern und für die Bibliothek ins Feld ziehen möchte ower:. Vielleicht keine "richtige" Light Novel sondern eher ein Klassiker der japanischen Literatur:

Eine Neuauflage einiger Geschichten des Schriftstellers Mori Ogai erscheint bald in 2 Taschenbüchern in Japan, illustriert von CLAMP .

Der erste Band enthält die Geschichten "Maihime" (als "Die Tänzerin" 1994 schon mal bei Suhrkamp auf deutsch erschienen, aber vergriffen) und "Utakata no ki" (etwa: Schaum auf den Wellen).

Der zweite Band enthält enthält "Sanshou Dayuu" (Sanshou, der Steward), "Takasebune" (Das Boot auf dem Fluss Takase) und "Abe Ichizoku" (Der Abe Klan).
